2003 Toyota Sequoia Axle Shaft Parts Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair an Axle Shaft on 2003 Toyota Sequoia?
A: The axle shaft service process starts by checking driveshaft joint movement then verifying smooth sliding of inboard joints for thrust operations and examining boot conditions for damage. The procedure begins with pliers to pinch the large clamp of the inboard joint boot while using a side cutter to cut the small inboard joint boot clamp and both outboard joint boot clamps. Do not punch the shafts before you expand the snap ring with an expander tool to remove the outboard joint shaft. Employ Special Service Tool: 09950-00020 together with a press tool to extract the dust seal and dust cover. Reassemble by putting in place new dust cover and dust seal through screwdriver and hammer work before installing temporary joint boots and boot clamps both outboard and inboard. Protect outboard joint shaft splines from damage with vinyl tape installation. The inboard joint shaft insertion occurs when the correct matchmarks align accompanied by a snap ring expander tool that also expands the snap ring. Before fitting the boot to the outboard joint shaft apply grease in the amount of 205 to 225 grams and follow a similar procedure when packing the inboard joint shaft and boot with grease (190 - 210 grams). Verify that both boots maintain proper position on the shaft groove without any deformation at the drive shaft length limit of 523.5 plus or minus 2.0 mm (20.610 plus or minus 0.079 inch). Fit the large inboard joint boot clamp to its position by squeezing it with pliers before adding other boot clamps to both joints using Special Service Tools: 09521-24010 to close the clamps and 09240-00020 to achieve a clearance between 1.0 - 1.5 mm (0.039 - 0.059 inch). Finally, check the drive shaft.
