2002 Toyota Sequoia Axle Shaft Parts Q&A
Q: How to service and repair the axle shaft on 2002 Toyota Sequoia?
A: Service and repair operations begin after the components receive complete breakdown. The differential side bearing retainer together with the speed sensor rotor will be removed through the procedure of attaching 4 nuts to serration bolts and using a hammer for extraction from the backing plate where reused nuts need to be discarded. Apply grinding to the retainer and sensor rotor surfaces before extracting them using a chisel in combination with a hammer. You can remove the axle shaft snap ring by applying a snap ring expander tool. The procedure for removing the rear axle shaft includes installing washers and nuts on serration bolts then torquing the nuts before bolts can be removed. Use Special Service Tool: 09521-25011, 09521-25021 on the backing plate while applying 4 nuts before using a press to remove the rear axle shaft and its spring washer and bearing retainer. To continue the process after Special Service Tool extraction, use a brass bar controlled by a hammer to eliminate the 6 hub bolts, oil deflector, and gasket. The bearing assembly requires four nuts to be fastened onto serration bolts before the plate removal while avoiding the reuse of these nuts. To determine whether a replacement is necessary use a dial indicator to check axle shaft runout which should not exceed 2.0 mm (0.079 inch) for the shaft and 0.1 mm (0.0040 inch) for the flange; the vehicle requires a new rear axle shaft if runout measurements exceed the specified limits or if the axle show signs of damage. The installation process for a new oil seal (inner section) requires the use of Special Service Tool: 09308-00010 for extraction as well as Special Service Tool: 09950-60020 (09951-00710), 09950-70010 (09951-07150) and a hammer along with the application of MP grease on the oil seal lip. Position the backing plate onto the bearing assembly after which you can install the serration bolts with a press while using two socket wrenches. Place a new gasket and oil deflector on the axle shaft then secure them using a washer and a new hub bolt along with the nut. To complete the installation of the rear axle shaft use Special Service Tool: 09631-12090, 09950-60020 (09951-01030) and a press along with a press to insert the rear axle shaft into the backing plate after installing the backing plate, spring washer, and bearing retainer components. After installing a snap ring through a snap ring expander you need to install new components including the speed sensor rotor and bearing retainer (differential side) with Special Service Tool: 09631-12090, 09950-60020 (09951-01030) and a press requiring a standard length of 132.8 plus or minus 1.0 mm (5.228 plus or minus 0.039 in.).
