2001 Toyota Sequoia Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the axle shaft on 2001 Toyota Sequoia?
A: The service and repair of the axle shaft starts by removing the rear wheel followed by tightening it to 110 nm (1,150 kgf-cm or 83 ft. lbs.). The brake line disconnection requires Special Service Tool: 09023-00100 to remove the clip with a final torque of 15.5 Nm (158 kgf-cm, 11 ft. lbs.). The brake caliper and disc can be removed after unbolted their 2 fasteners with 105 Nm torque. You must use a dial indicator to check bearing backlash and axle shaft deviation because any reading beyond 0.6 mm (0.024 inch) or 0.1 mm (0.0040 inch) requires component replacement. Take out the two bolts from the parking brake assembly while pulling the backing plate cable before setting the torque to 8.0 Nm (82 kgf-cm, 71 inch lbs.) for both sides. Using torque of 122 Nm (1,244 kgf-cm, 90 ft. lbs.) remove the four nuts before extracting the axle shaft assembly without harming the oil seal while removing its associated O-ring from the axle housing. Disassemble the bearing retainer (differential side) along with the speed sensor rotor by screwing in four nuts onto serration bolts before using a hammer to remove them while sanding retained surfaces given to unscrewing tools. The snap ring expander device helps remove the snap ring before pulling apart the rear axle shaft from this assembly using Special Service Tool: 09521-25011, 09521-25021 on the backing plate and a press to disconnect the components. Use a hammer to remove the bearing assembly by breaking the serration bolts from their position. A dial indicator should be used to examine axle shaft runout while ensuring both shaft and flange tolerances remain below 2.0 mm (0.079 inch) and 0.1 mm (0.0040 inch). Axle components need replacement if damage or excessive runout values are detected. Replace the inner oil seal using 09308-00010 Special Service Tool then use Special Service Tools 09950-60020 (09951-00710), 09950-70010 (09951-07150) with a hammer while coating the oil seal lip with MP grease. The bearing assembly requires installation through which operators must position the backing plate followed by using a double-wrench press to install the serration bolts. Place a new gasket beneath the axle shaft after setting the oil deflector into position. Apply the washer to install a new hub bolt followed by torquing the bolt. Drill the rear axle shaft through the backing plate with Special Service Tool: 09631-12090, 09950-60020 (09951-01030) and a press while mounting a spring washer and bearing retainer on the front of the rear axle shaft. Set up a new snap ring via snap ring expander before putting in the speed sensor rotor and bearing retainer (differential side) with identical tools to achieve a standard length of 132.8 plus or minus 1.0 mm (5.228 plus or minus 0.039 in.). The final process involves undoing removal steps while ending with filling the brake reservoir with fluid followed by a brake system bleed until all leaks are checked and speed sensor signals are verified.
