2003 Toyota Land Cruiser Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to Service and Repair an Axle Shaft on 2003 Toyota Land Cruiser?
A: Disassembly of the axle shaft requires starting by first removing the bearing retainer from the differential side along with the rotor from the ABS speed sensor. Install four nuts on the serration bolts and extract the components from the backing plate through hammering action while discarding all removed nuts for replacement. Start by grinding the retainer and sensor rotor surfaces with a grinder and separate them from the backing plate using a chisel along with a hammer. The snap ring removal from the axle shaft requires an expander tool. To remove the shaft of the backing plate, install four washers along with a nut to each serration bolt before torquing them then extracting bolts and washers. Use Special Service Tool: 09521-25011 and 09521-25021 with a press setup to uninstall the backing plate components consisting of the axle shaft bearing retainer and plate washer through the 4 nuts. You can remove the Special Service Tool after which a brass bar combined with a hammer will allow you to extract the 5 hub bolts and oil deflector and gasket. The outer oil seal extraction requires Special Service Tool: 09308-00010 while 4 nuts secured on serration bolts enable hammering off the bearing case from the backing plate. Reject reuse of these nuts. A press device based on Special Service Tool: 09950-60020 (09951-00810), 09950-70010 (09951-07100) with the addition of 09950-60020 (09951-00810) is required to extract the rear axle bearing. The axle shaft should be checked with a dial indicator for runout measurements while inspecting for damage or excessive runout beyond 2.0 mm (0.079 inch) maximum shaft runout or 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch) maximum flange runout requires a new component. Replace the inner oil seal with Special Service Tool: 09308-00010 and afterward install a new oil seal by utilizing Special Service Tool: 09950-60020 (09951-00710), 09950-70010 (09951-07150) and a hammer that requires MP grease coating on the oil seal lip. Reassembly requires special installation of the rear axle bearing using Special Service Tools 09950-60020 (09951-00890) and a press which allows the installation of the 4 serration bolts with the help of 2 socket wrenches at the bearing case after positioning the backing plate. Use Special Service Tool: 09950-60020 (09951-00810) and 09950-70010 (09951-07100) along with a hammer to install the outer oil seal with MP grease coating on its lips. To install the new hub bolt first add a washer and nut followed by torquing the 5 hub bolts. Besides this install the new gasket with oil deflector on the axle shaft before placing a new hub bolt. In order to install the axle shaft to the backing plate use Special Service Tool: 09631-12090, 09950-60020 (09951-01030) and a press to slide in the axle shaft combined with the backing plate and plate washer and bearing retainer. Use a snap ring expander to install a new snap ring before installing a new ABS speed sensor rotor with bearing retainer through Special Service Tool: 09631-12090, 09950-60020 (09951-01030) while operating a press set at 170.7 plus or minus 1.0 mm (6.720 plus or minus 0.039 inch).
