2003 Toyota Corolla Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the rear wheel hub and bearing assembly on 2003 Toyota Corolla?
A: The procedure to replace the rear wheel hub and bearing assembly starts with wheel removal and brake drum sub-assembly uninstallation. The skid control sensor wire must be disconnected first along with its ABS system before removing the 4 bolts from the rear axle hub & bearing assembly LH. Fit the new rear axle hub & bearing assembly LH to its mounting position with the four bolts tightened to 61 Nm (622 kgf-cm, 45 ft. lbs.). When reconnecting the skid control sensor wire (with ABS) position an indicator device to observe the bearing backlash at the hub center while ensuring the backlash stays below 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch). The rear axle hub & bearing assembly LH needs replacement when the backlash measurement reaches values above its specified limit. A dial indicator should be used to measure axle hub deviation at the outer surface beyond the bolt area. Any deviation exceeding 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch) requires replacing the LH rear axle hub & bearing assembly. Install the rear brake drum sub-assembly and rear wheel by tightening them to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs). Finish the inspection by checking the ABS speed sensor signal while ABS technology is enabled.
