2003 Toyota Corolla Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the vacuum brake booster on 2003 Toyota Corolla?
A: The procedure for vacuum brake booster replacement begins with draining brake fluid prior to washing off any fluid that touches painted surfaces. Disassembly of the vacuum brake booster starts with removing the air cleaner cap sub-assy and the air cleaner case sub-assy through the air cleaner element and 3 bolts removal process. The brake master cylinder sub-assy removal process starts with disconnecting the brake master cylinder push rod clevis through lock nut loosening and removal of clip and clevis pin together with wave washer. The cruise control actuator assembly can be removed by disconnecting its two nuts and bolt followed by setting it to the side. The brake booster assy removal process requires Special Service Tool: 09023-00100 to disconnect the brake tube from the flexible hose after using a spanner tool then move the clip to free the vacuum hose. The brake booster and gasket can be removed after cutting the brake tubes from their clamp and taking off four clevis nuts and brake tubes. Install the booster push rod clevis onto the rod first followed by attaching the brake booster with new gasket then torquing the 4 nuts to 12.7 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.) before connecting the 2 or 3 brake tubes to their corresponding clamp along with the vacuum hose attachment to the brake booster. Proceed with the brake tube installation onto the flexible hose using Special Service Tool: 09023-00100 along with a spanner before torquing up to 15.2 Nm (155 kgf-cm, 11 ft. lbs.). First reinstall the front wheel LH at 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.) followed by attaching the cruise control actuator assembly using 2 nuts and bolts with 43 Nm (438 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.). torque. Attach the brake master cylinder push rod by applying lithium soap base glycol grease to the clevis pin while connecting it with a clevis that has a pin and wave washer and clip installed. Follow the brake master cylinder sub-assy installation by placing the air cleaner case sub-assy and securing it through 3 bolts and reinstalling the air cleaner element. Conclude installation with the air cleaner cap sub-assy while filling the reservoir with brake fluid and performing the master cylinder bleed using Special Service Tool: 09023-00100 and bleeding the brake line. Check brake pedal height and free play alongside the reserve distance and inspect for brake fluid leakage.
