2002 Toyota Corolla Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the vacuum brake booster on 2002 Toyota Corolla?
A: The vacuum brake booster service requires initially removing the master cylinder before disconnecting the vacuum hose from the brake booster followed by removing the pedal return spring. The brake booster service requires removing firstly the clip and wave washer together with the clevis pin followed by disconnecting the brake booster using 4 nuts and clevis to remove the booster along with the gasket. First step for installation is to use a new gasket to mount the brake booster followed by attaching clevis to the operating rod and tightening booster installation nuts to 13 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.). The brake pedal installation requires you to first place the clevis pin into both the wave washer and the clevis. Then add the clamp to the clevis pin and the pedal return spring. To adjust the booster push rod length, place a gasket against the master cylinder while setting Special Service Tool: 09737-00011 on top of it then lower the pin until it just touches the piston. Set the Special Service Tool: 09737-00011 upside down on the booster and measure the distance between the booster push rod and pinhead to verify a 0 mm (0 inch) gap. Use the proper tools to adjust the booster push rod length until the rod presents a minor contact with the pinhead when you have sufficiently pressed down the brake pedal. To finish the installation process you must first mount the master cylinder then join the vacuum hose to the brake booster followed by brake fluid addition into the reservoir before performing brake system bleeding. The service technician must inspect for leaks before adjusting brake pedal calibration and must tighten the clevis lock nut to 260 kgf-cm (26 Nm, 19 ft-lbs) torque. An operational check ends this procedure.
