2002 Toyota Corolla Brake Caliper Parts Q&A
Q: How to service and repair the brake caliper on 2002 Toyota Corolla?
A: The brake caliper service requires starting the procedure by removing cylinder boot set ring and cylinder boot using a screwdriver. Place cloth material between the piston and caliper before using compressed air with care to push the piston out of the cylinder while keeping fingers away from the piston. Use a screwdriver to remove the piston seal before taking out the two sliding pins from the torque plate keeping in mind the necessary sliding pin arrangement for reinstallation. The lower section should get the sliding pin with sliding bushing while the upper section should get the one without bushing. For installation of new dust boots use a 19 mm socket combined with a hammer while making sure the metal plate portion of each boot fits tightly within the torque plate. Experts should measure pad lining thickness with a ruler according to 12.0 mm (0.472 inch) standard and 1.0 mm (0.039 inch) minimum; the pads must be replaced when they reach minimum or display unresolved significant uneven wear. The disc thickness measurement with a micrometer must meet the standard requirement of 22.0 mm (0.866 inch) and minimum requirement of 20.0 mm (0.787 inch). Replacing the disc should be done if either standard is reached and grinding is needed for scored or unevenly worn discs. Use a dial indicator to check disc runout at 10 mm (0.39 inch) from the edge and the tolerance for runout is 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch); check bearing play and axle hub runout if the tolerance is exceeded before performing adjustment or grinding. First remove the two bolts along with torque plate from the knuckle while you take out the hub nuts before disc installation. Reverse turn the disc one quarter position and secure the hub nuts to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). Measure runout again to record position and continue the process until the minimum runout reaches less than 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch); then install the disc at this angle if the result is satisfactory; otherwise use a new disc followed by another runout check. Fasten the torque plate and tighten the mounting bolts to reach 88 Nm (900 kgf-cm, 65 ft. lbs). Lithium soap base glycol grease and disc brake grease are used during reassembly on specific parts according to the indicated order.
