2001 Toyota Corolla Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the brake caliper on 2001 Toyota Corolla?
A: Service and repair of the brake caliper begins with using a screwdriver to remove the cylinder boot set ring and cylinder boot. Drop a piece of cloth between the caliper and piston before pushing out the piston from the cylinder with compressed air while maintaining your fingers safe from the piston. First separate the piston seal with a screwdriver before taking out the 2 torque plate sliding pins. Be aware that in reassembly the pin with a bushing should be inserted below and the plain pin above. The dust boots need tapping out with a screwdriver and hammer before installation but new boots should be installed with a 19-mm socket and hammer so that the metal plate securely fits within the torque plate. The pad lining thickness must be measured using a ruler to determine if replacement is needed when it meets the standard of 12.0 mm (0.472 inch) and minimum of 1.0 mm (0.039 inch); aging lining below the minimum level along with severe pad wear requires immediate replacement. A micrometer should measure discs for which the standard is 22.0 mm (0.866 inch) with minimum 20.0 mm (0.787 inch); replace the elements if measurements fall below minimum standards or if the discs show scoring or uneven wear. The runout measurement of the disc should be performed using a dial indicator 10 mm (0.39 inch) from the edge while keeping the maximum allowable runout at 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch); check bearing play and axle hub runout and consider adjustments or grinding when needed. To perform adjustment first remove the torque plate together with the two knuckle bolts before removing the hub nuts and disc. Reinstall the disc by rotating it by one quarter from its original position and torque the hub nuts to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). Check the runout for this minimum position then measure again. Continue this procedure until the disc exhibits runouts less than 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch) becomes visible while maintaining these minimum values. Otherwise, replace the disc for a new check. The last step involves placing the torque plate along with torqueing the mounting bolts to 88 Nm (900 kgf-cm, 65 ft. lbs.). Procedure for reassembly involves performing operations in the reverse sequence of disassembly steps while applying lithium soap base glycol grease and disc brake grease to specified components.
