2000 Toyota Corolla Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the brake caliper on 2000 Toyota Corolla?
A: Start the brake caliper servicing and repair with screwdriver removal of the cylinder boot set ring combined with cylinder boot. Fit a piece of cloth between the piston and caliper before removing the piston through the cylinder with compressed air while avoiding placing fingers in front of the piston. The piston seal must be removed first with a screwdriver before extracting both sliding pins from the torque plate. Note that during reassembly the lower part accepts the sliding pin with bushing and the upper part takes the pin without bushing. After tapping the 2 dust boots with a screwdriver and hammer you can install new dust boots through the use of a 19 mm socket and hammer followed by careful placement of the metal plate portion inside the torque plate. A ruler should be used to check the pad lining thickness and failure should occur when measurements fall below 12.0 mm or are 1.0 mm or less and the pads should be replaced at such times. The disc thickness should be measured with a micrometer to ensure it remains above 20.0 but below 22.0 mm and without scores while adhering to the 20.0 mm minimum standard. Uneven wear or scores indicate replacement. The disc runout requires measurement by a dial indicator set 10 mm away from the edge and accepts runout readings up to 0.05 mm. Exceeding this amount demands inspection of bearing play and axle hub runout followed by necessary adjustment or grinding procedures. To perform adjustments release the knuckle torque plate and two bolts after which the technician removes hub nuts and disc before reinstalling the disc in a rotated position by 1/4 from its original location and torques the hub nuts to 103 Nm. The procedure requires runout remeasurement until the minimum reading reaches below 0.05 mm then the torque plate installation followed by torque bolt application to 88 Nm. The reverse operation sequence of disassembly enables reassembly with grease application on indicated parts using lithium soap base glycol grease together with disc brake grease.
