2003 Toyota Camry Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the rear wheel bearing on 2003 Toyota Camry?
A: Starting the replacement of the rear wheel bearing includes first taking out the rear wheel. Start by disconnecting the rear disc brake caliper assembly on the left side by removing the bolt then disconnecting the rear flexible hose. Proceed to remove the two bolts securing the caliper assembly then support it properly. Follow the next step by taking away the rear disc (for disc rear brake designs) and the rear brake drum sub-assembly (for drum rear brake designs). When ABS is part of the vehicle disconnect the skid control sensor wire followed by removing the left-side rear axle hub and bearing assembly through its four bolts. The installation process starts with skid control sensor removal when ABS equipment is present. The new skid control sensor then replaces the old one. Install the left side rear axle hub and bearing assembly using its four bolts while torquing to 80 Nm (816 kgf-cm, 59 ft. lbs.). Reinstall the wire that connects to the skid control sensor when ABS is present. Check the bearing backlash through dial indicator placement at the center of the axle hub but maintain measurements below 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch). Replace the axle hub assembly if bearing backlash exceeds this limit. A dial indicator should measure deviation at the surface facing the bolt of the hub bolt to determine if repair is needed; exceeding 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch) requires replacing the axle hub assembly. The reinstallation of the disc begins by placing the rear disc on brakes of the disc type then adding the left-side rear disc brake caliper using two torqued bolts at 61.8 Nm (630 kgf-cm) or 46 ft. lbs., followed by reconnecting the rear flexible hose with an 18.8 Nm (192 kgf-cm) or 14 ft. lbs. torque. Before rehanging the rear wheel of drum brake type vehicles new brake drum components must be fitted and torqued to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). Check the rear wheel alignment while inspecting it and verify the ABS speed sensor signal.
