2003 Toyota Camry Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: What is the procedure to overhaul the Parking Brake Shoe on 2003 Toyota Camry?
A: Start the parking brake assembly overhaul by disconnecting the rear wheel followed by separating the rear disc brake caliper assembly LH after removing 2 bolts which do not require flexible hose disconnection. Use the adjustment technique to remove the rear disc while putting matchmarks between disc and axle hub. The disc may require additional adjustment until the wheel can spin freely. Check the brake disc inside diameter with a brake drum gauge to establish that it measures 170 mm (6.69 inch) as standard size yet operates within a maximum range of 171 mm (6.73 inch). Extract the 2 return tension springs using needle-nose pliers to slide out the front shoe toward removal of the compression spring. To remove both parts start by unwinding the cup claw followed by disconnecting the parking brake cable from the shoe lever before taking out the tension spring and shoe adjuster screw set from both shoes together with the 2 shoe hold-down springs and 4 cups and 2 pins. Use a screwdriver to extract the washer before you take off the shim along with the shoe lever from the parking brake shoe. Use a ruler to measure the lining thickness of the shoe and find out it must be 1.0 mm (0.039 inch) but change the brake shoe when measurements are minimum or show serious wear. Apply chalk to the disc to check proper contact with the shoe lining and grind the shoe lining when necessary. The shoe attaching surface on the backing plate requires high-temperature grease before shoe installation and shoe lever and shim assembly should be done on the rear shoe with a new C-washer. The feeler gauge measurement must show clearances below 0.35 mm (0.0138 inch); any exceeding value requires replacement of the shim. The adjusting bolt requires grease before installing the shoes with screw sets and tension springs as well as pins, cups, and two shoe hold-down springs. Install the parking brake shoe after attaching the shoe lever to the cable and then fit the parking brake shoe strut LH with compression spring and return tension springs. All components need to be properly installed with strict attention to removing all oil and grease from contact areas between friction surfaces. The adjustment for parking brake shoe clearance requires removing the hole plug before turning the adjuster until the disc locks followed by adjusting it so the disc rotates smoothly while returning 8 notches. The procedure requires checking brake drag then inserting the hole plug followed by installing the rear disc brake caliper assembly LH with 2 bolts torques at 47 Nm (480 kgf-cm, 35 ft. lbs.) and finally installing the rear wheel to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.) before inspecting and adjusting the parking brake pedal travel.
