• Q: How to replace the vacuum brake booster on 2003 Toyota Camry?

  A: First step when replacing the vacuum brake booster is to empty the brake fluid and rinse away any fluid that spilled on painted parts. Take out the air cleaner parts and use Tool 09023-00100 to unload the brake master cylinder. You can split the charcoal canister assembly of 1MZ-FE engines through its two bolt removal. Detach the vacuum hose assembly by removing the bolt to separate it from the bracket then slide the retaining clip off from the brake booster. Separate and remove left-hand scuff plate from front door, left-hand side cowl trim, instrument panel upper assembly, and instrument panel insert lower assembly. Use a clip puller to take out the push rod pin from its clip space and then loosen the locknut to detach the brake master cylinder push rod clevis. Unscrew brake tube No. 5 using Special Service Tool: 09023-00100 then remove the brake booster assembly by taking out its four nuts and pulling it out. Replace the brake booster gasket with a new one and reinstall the replacement part. Secure the brake booster assembly with four nuts at 13 Nm and add front tube No. 5 with Special Service Tool 09023-00100 and torque to 15 Nm. Fasten the push rod clevis onto the hole and the locknut. Insert the push rod pin with clip over the other end and apply lithium soap base glycol grease to the marked section. Put back the instrument panel insert sub-assembly lower LH followed by installing upper instrument panel then cowl side trim sub-assembly LH and front door scuff plate LH. Reassemble the vacuum system by adding the vacuum hose together with its bracket to the body parts and attaching the vacuum hose to the brake booster with its appropriate connections. Secure the charcoal canister assembly to its original position with two bolts at 43 Nm (440 kgf cm, 32 inch lbs.). Check and set the brake booster push rod positioning using a combination of Special Service Tools: 09023-00100, 09737-00012, 09737-00020. Replace the brake master cylinder sub-assembly and air cleaner assembly afterwards. Put brake fluid into the reservoir and bleed the master cylinder with Special Service Tool: 09023-00100 before moving to brake line and fluid checks. After spotting brake fluid leaks the final task is to set and test brake pedal position.
