2003 Toyota Avalon Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the brake caliper on 2003 Toyota Avalon?
A: Service and repairs on the brake caliper start with removing the cylinder boot set ring and cylinder boot from the cylinder through the use of a screwdriver. You should place a piece of cloth between the piston and caliper before using compressed air to push out the piston from the cylinder while keeping your fingers behind the piston at all times. The piston seal can be extracted from the cylinder by using a screwdriver which also enables easy removal of both dust boots. The inspection requires measuring the pad lining thickness as it must be minimum 1.0 mm (0.039 inch) but must also match the standard 10.0 mm (0.394 inch). Check the thickness of disks against 12.0 mm (0.472 inch) as the standard requirement with a minimum acceptable measurement of 10.5 mm (0.413 inch). Measure the disc runout because values above 0.15 mm (0.0059 inch) require checking bearing play in the axle hub's axial direction together with disc hub runout. Standard disc runout adjustment or "On-Car" brake lathe grinding should be applied in case both inspection results are normal. The necessary adjustments require first loosening the two bolts alongside the torque plate before taking off the hub nuts and disc. Fit the disc onto the hub by rotating it one-fifth of its original position before torquing hub nuts to 103 Nm (1050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). Perform disc runout measurements while recording the data points for runout and disc position on the hub. Reuse the procedure until you achieve an installed disc position with runout less than 0.15 mm (0.0059 inch). Changing the disc will be necessary when the minimum runout measurement exceeds this specification value. Repeat the inspection process afterwards. Position the torque plate before securing all mounting bolts through application of torque which should reach 47 Nm (475 kgf-cm, 34 ft. lbs.). During reassembly workers must perform the steps in reverse order of disassembly while lubricating all indicated parts with lithium soap base glycol grease.
