    Q:
How to service and repair the brake caliper on Toyota Solara? Posted by Customer
    A:
Begin brake caliper maintenance by first taking apart all components starting with the removal of sliding bushing and 2 dust boots then main pin boot followed by set ring and cylinder boot using a screwdriver. Use compressed air to extract the piston through the caliper while maintaining distance between your fingers and the piston. Firstly position cloth material in between both components prior to operation. The piston seal needs to be removed through screwdriver use. A ruler should be used to check the pad lining thickness during inspection as the standard length is 10.0 mm but the minimum is 1.0 mm; pad replacement is necessary if the pads reach the minimum threshold or show evidence of serious wear. The disc measurement using a micrometer should establish 10.0 mm (0.394 inch) standard thickness as the minimum requirement is 9.0 mm (0.354 inch); when the disc thickness hits the minimum or shows damages, it needs replacement or grinding. Use a dial indicator focused at the outer edge 10 mm (0.39 inch) to measure disc runout with a maximum allowable 0.15 mm (0.0059 inch). Further testing should check bearing play and axle hub runout that requires possible adjustment or grinding of the disc. Shipbuilders should remove two bolts and the torque plate followed by hub nuts and disc before reinstalling the disc with its original position turned 1/5 degrees and torque the hub nuts to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). Measure hub position runouts one more time before selecting the disc for each position based on minimum measurement results of less than 0.15 mm (0.0059 inch). However, if the minimum measurement result exceeds 0.15 mm (0.0059 inch), replace the current disc and repeat the measurement. Place the torque plate afterward tightening all mounting bolts to 47 Nm (475 kgf-cm, 34 ft. lbs.). The reassembly procedure starts by applying lithium soap base glycol grease to specified parts and then installing the piston seal without twisting it before adding the piston and cylinder boot and set ring and main pin boot and finishing with the 2 dust boots and sliding bushing.
