2002 Toyota Tundra Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the Brake Pad Set on 2002 Toyota Tundra?
A: A brake pads replacement requires initial front wheel removal together with pad lining thickness check for minimum 1.0 mm (0.039 inch) standard; new pads are needed when thickness falls below. Start pad replacement by first removing the clip and two pins along with the anti-rattle spring. Proceed to remove both pads together with their accompanying four anti-squeal shims. However, the anti-rattle spring and clip can stay if they remain deformation-free with no cracks or wear and can be cleaned from rust and dirt. New pad installation includes disc thickness and runout testing and requires replacement of anti-squeal shims when replacing the pads. Use a monkey wrench handle or its equivalent to push brake fluid from the reservoir while pushing in the pistons through the taped handle one wheel at a time until the opposite piston stops escaping. The piston should not require extra force while bleeding brake fluid through the bleeder plug if necessary. Install new anti-squeal shims on the pads while spreading disc brake grease across both sides of each inner shim before inserting the pads without exposing the rubbing surface to oil or grease. The installation order begins with the anti-rattle spring followed by 2 pins and the clip leading up to front wheel reinstallation that requires a torque of 113 Nm (1,150 kgf-cm, 83 ft. lbs.). Check that the fluid reaches the max line after you have pressed the brake pedal several times.
