2001 Toyota Tundra Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Brake Pad Set on 2001 Toyota Tundra?
A: Inspection of front wheel pads begins with removing the wheel followed by examining the pad lining thickness which should be at least 1.0 mm (0.039 inch) for quality replacement. Start by removing the clip along with the 2 pins and anti-rattle spring. Then extract the 2 pads and 4 anti-squeal shims but keep the anti-rattle spring and clip for reuse when they are in good condition, have no deformities and cracks, wear marks, and they should be free from rust and dirt particles. The disc thickness and runout inspection determines new pad installation timing while the replacement of anti-squeal shims during pad installation is required. Begin by removing a small quantity of fluid from the reservoir then use a taped monkey wrench handle to press the pistons while paying attention to changing pads individually to stop the opposite piston from escape; when encountering difficult pressure loosen the bleeder plug to let fluid drain. Install the new anti-squeal shims onto the pads and apply disc brake grease to each side of the innermost shims before installing the pads while keeping the rubbing surface grease-free. Reconnect the front wheel after installing the anti-rattle spring and 2 pins and the clip with proper torque of 113 Nm (1,150 kgf-cm, 83 ft. lbs.). Perform brake pedal depression several times before verifying that the fluid reaches the max line mark.
