2002 Toyota Tundra Brake Caliper Parts Q&A
Q: How to service and repair a brake caliper on 2002 Toyota Tundra?
A: Start brake caliper repair by removing 4 cylinder boot set rings and boots with the assistance of a screwdriver. Use a wooden plate between pistons while inserting the pad on one side followed by compressed air piston removal from the cylinder and maintain finger safety. Operating a screwdriver will remove the 4 piston seals that are found within the cylinder. To inspect the pads check their thickness using a ruler; the pad should measure at least 1.0 mm (0.039 inch) unless the standard thickness of 11.5 mm (0.453 inch) is reached or the wear pattern is uneven. Pad replacement is necessary when either condition is met. A disc thickness check with a micrometer should measure 28.0 mm (1.102 inch) as standard while the minimum will be 26.0 mm (1.024 inch). Disc replacement is needed when it reaches the minimum point or when the presence of scoring and uneven wear becomes evident. A dial indicator should measure the disc runout at a 10 mm (0.39 inch) distance from the outside edge reaching a maximal runout of 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch). If a disc exceeds this measurement threshold then replacement or grinding on a "On-Car" brake lathe is required but front hub bearing play must be within specification before measurement procedures. The disc runout requires adjustment by following this process: detach hub nuts and disk, install the disk at a 1/6 position difference from its original position, then tighten hub nuts to 113 Nm (1,150 kgf-cm, 83 ft. lbs.), finally check runout measurements before repeating the steps until you achieve the desired results; discard the disk if this approach fails to improve runout. Disc brake grease and lithium soap base glycol grease should be applied to specified parts during reassembly as the process reverses disassembly steps.
