2002 Toyota Tacoma Brake Master Cylinder Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the Brake Master Cylinder on 2002 Toyota Tacoma?
A: The Brake Master Cylinder repair process starts with removing the reservoir through set screw extraction and pulling it out while maintaining 1.5 Nm torque (15 kgf-cm, 13 inch lbs.). Afterwards, detach the cap and strainer from their assembly. After taking out the two grommets you should place the cylinder inside a vise. Use a screwdriver to push the pistons fully into place. Then unbolts the piston stopper with a torque of 8.0 Nm while also replacing the gasket before torquing the bolt to 8.0 Nm. After taping the screwdriver tip remove the snap ring from the pistons with snap ring pliers while pushing the piston inside using a screwdriver. The removal of the No. 1 piston and spring requires pulling them straight out to prevent damaging the cylinder bore while paying attention to not tear the rubber lips on the pistons. The procedure to obtain the No. 2 piston and spring involves placing a rag and two blocks of wood on the working surface followed by tapping the cylinder flange against the blocks gently while keeping the rag-to-block height at 100 mm (3.94 inch). Before continuing check the cylinder bore for rust or scoring followed by a verification of wear or damage. Cleaning or replacing the cylinder needs to occur if necessary. Reassembly begins with the reverse sequence of disassembly and requires application of lithium soap base glycol grease to the rubber components which bear arrows.
