2002 Toyota Highlander Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the windshield on 2002 Toyota Highlander?
A: The process of replacing a windshield starts with disassembling front pillar garnish LH and RH, LH and RH visor assemblies and visor holder, along with courtesy lens and roof console box assembly (without sliding roof) or roof console L/relay box assembly (with sliding roof) and assist grip sub-assembly and front door opening trim Weather Strip LH and RH and roof headlining assembly from the vehicle. All removals need to happen within suitable coverage for windshield glass removal. The next step requires removal of the front wiper arms LH and RH along with cowl top ventilator louver sub-assembly and windshield moulding outside LH and RH by using protective tape with a screwdriver to remove clips and hooks. Cut the flanges of the windshield outer clip Number 1 by using a drill to make holes smaller than 4 mm (0.16 in.) with precaution towards potential damage. Cut the outer upper part of windshield moulding with a knife while keeping the body intact before removing the inner rear view mirror assembly. A piano wire should pass through the interior of the vehicle for body lubricant attachment to wooden blocks. You should cover the outer surface with protective tape to avoid scratches and also approach the adhesive cutting process with the piano wire while avoiding any damage to the paint and interior ornaments. Snag the glass-free from its mount then clear it with a combination of cleaner and scraper before wholly avoiding contact with the glass surface. Lithium battery wipers with damper should be installed on glass surfaces at dimensions 9 mm (0.35 in.) and 7 mm (0.28 in.) depending on the presence of an outer mirror heater system. Install the new window glass adhesive dam which has two dimensions: 7 mm, 0.28 in. and 37 mm, 1.46 in. Then clean the contact surface of the body by removing rough areas and wiping with a shop rag. Place the glass at its correct position while marking key reference points before you apply Primer M to the visible body area which needs to dry for a minimum time of 3 minutes. Apply Primer G to the glass edge before drying it and then use the sealer gun with the cartridge dispenser to apply adhesive of correct dimensions (8 mm, 0.31 in. and 12 mm, 0.47 in.). A proper installation of the glass requires you to line up its position according to reference marks while applying adhesive along the rim edges and securing it with protective tape until the adhesive reaches full hardness. Move on to install the new windshield moulding outer upper by gently tapping it into position and perform a water leakage test after the curing time while filling any leaks before attaching windshield outside moulding clip No.1 through an air riveter or hand riveter in a correct mandrel position.
