  • Q: How to replace the rear Sway Bar Kit on 2002 Toyota Highlander?
    A: Starting the sway bar kit replacement process requires removal of the wheel from the rear of the vehicle. The left-hand side rear sway bar link assembly needs its 2 nuts detached for removal of the rear sway bar link assembly. Use a 5mm hexagon wrench to support the ball joint stud when its nut turns. Perform the same procedure of assembly on the right-hand side sway bar link. Install the left-hand side sway bar link assembly nut by flipping the ball joint stud five times then continuously rotate it with a torque wrench at a speed of 2-4 seconds per turn while taking the 5th torque measurement. The acceptable torque range is 0.05 - 1.0 Nm (0.5 - 10 kgf-cm, 0.4 - 8.7 inch lbs.). Separate the rear sway bar bracket No. 1 by unbolting and removing the two bolts and bushing and No. 1 bracket from the left side. Perform the same procedure on the right side. Install the new rear sway bar kit followed by rear sway bar bracket No.1 by positioning the bushing towards the inner side of the sway bar kit stopper while installing the 2 left-side bolts at 19 Nm (195 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.). Apply this installation order to the right side as well. Install the rear sway bar link assembly on the left side before tightening it with 2 nuts at 39 Nm (400 kgf-cm, 29 ft. lbs.); in case the ball joint rotates with the nut in place, hold the stud with a hexagon (5 mm) wrench then repeat the process for the right side. Reinstall the rear wheel while tightening it to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.) and check the rear wheel alignment.
