2002 Toyota Highlander Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the lower ball joint assembly on the front left side on 2002 Toyota Highlander?
A: The first step for replacing the front left side lower ball joint assembly requires removal of the front wheel along with the front axle hub LH nut using Special Service Tool: 09930-00010. Begin by removing the speed sensor front LH followed by separating the front disc brake caliper assembly LH with its front disc then proceed with the front suspension arm sub-assembly lower No. 1 LH. The next steps involve using Special Service Tool: 09628-62011 to sever the tie rod assembly LH before separating the front suspension arm sub-assembly lower No. 1 LH and extracting the front axle assembly LH. Inspection of the ball joint assembly front LH demands to flip the ball joint stud repeatedly five times before applying the nut. This procedure should be completed using Special Service Tool: 09628-62011. A torque wrench should be used for continuous nut turning at a pace of 3-5 seconds per revolution until a torque reading between 0.98 - 3.43 Nm (10 - 35 kgf-cm, 8.7 - 30 inch lbs.) is recorded after the fifth revolution. Lower ball joint assembly front LH gets installed first while front axle assembly LH gets installed after then front suspension arm sub-assembly lower No. 1 LH and the tie rod assembly LH. Install the front disc followed by the front disc brake caliper assembly LH and then the speed sensor front LH. Fasten the front axle hub LH nut to 103 Nm of torque before reattaching the front wheel. Inspect and adjust front wheel alignment while checking the speed sensor signal as the last steps of installation.
