2002 Toyota Highlander Shock Absorber Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the Front Shock Absorber LH on 2002 Toyota Highlander?
A: The first step to replace the Front Shock Absorber LH requires removing the front wheel followed by separating the Front Stabilizer Link Assy LH by taking off the nut to disconnect it from the shock absorber while using a hexagon (6 mm) wrench when the ball joint turns with the nut. Start by disconnecting the front shock absorber with coil spring by untightening its center nut then disconnecting the flexible hose and ABS speed sensor wire harness bracket followed by removing 2 lower side nuts and lower side bolts and 3 upper side nuts which enables assembly removal. Install two nuts and a bolt to the front shock absorber bracket at the lower section before placing it in a vise. The Special Service Tool: 09727-30021 should be used to compress the coil spring while avoiding impact wrenches as they could damage the tool during removal of the suspension support, ball bearing, spring upper seat, upper insulator, coil spring, spring bumper, and lower insulator. Test the shock absorber assembly front LH by manipulating its shock rod while listening for irregular resistance or noises and replace it right away in case either issue occurs. To install the lower insulator start by placing it onto the shock absorber then attach the spring bumper onto the piston rod followed by readjusting Special Service Tool: 09727-30021 to compress the coil spring while navigating the spring lower seat gap for the lower end of the coil spring insertion. Place the upper insulator followed by the spring upper seat with external mark toward the outdoors, add a new ball bearing and suspensions support with external mark in this direction and secure the center nut by hand for now. Begin by installing the shock absorber with its upper 3 nuts and 2 bolts and torquing them to 80 Nm (815 kgf-cm, 59 ft. lbs.) before torquing the lower 2 bolts to 210 Nm (2,140 kgf-cm, 155 ft. lbs.). Finally, tighten the center nut to 49 Nm (500 kgf-cm, 36 ft. lbs.) then install the flexible hose and ABS speed sensor wire harness bracket with its bolt at 18.8 Nm (192 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.). Reinstall the front wheel by tightening it to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.) before inspecting and adjusting front wheel alignment. After that, install the front stabilizer link by tightening its nut to 74 Nm (755 kgf-cm, 55 ft. lbs.) and possibly using a hexagon (6 mm) wrench if needed. To dispose of the shock absorber assembly front LH, users must fully extend the shock absorber rod while drilling a hole into the cylinder to remove the internal gas contents. Users must exercise caution by blocking flying chips and realizing that the gas is non-toxic and both colorless and odorless.
