2002 Toyota Camry Crankshaft Seal Parts Q&A
Q: How to Replace the Crankshaft Seal in a Timing Gear or Timing Chain Case on 2002 Toyota Camry?
A: The initial step to replace timing gear case or timing chain case oil seal involves removing the front wheel RH and front fender apron seal RH together with engine cover sub-assembly No. 1 and the engine moving control rod with bracket by detaching the 3 bolts. Engine mounting stay No. 2 RH together with engine mounting bracket No. 2 RH must be taken out followed by removing the fan and generator V belt using Special Service Tool: 09249-63010. Start by removing the crankshaft pulley with Special Service Tools that consist of 09213-54015 (91651-60855), 09330-00021 for TMC models and 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) with 09950-40011 (09951-04010, 09952-04010, 09953-04030, 09954-04010, 09955-04041, 09957-04010, 91111-51014) for TMMK models. To install the new oil seal first clean the lip with a knife then peel it out with a taping-tip screwdriver followed by inspection of the crankshaft for damage which can be fixed with sandpaper (#400). The procedure to install the new oil seal includes applying MP grease to the lip after cleaning it from foreign materials followed by using Special Service Tool: 09223-22010 with a hammer until reaching the rear oil seal retainer edge flush, then wiping off any remaining grease from the crankshaft. The procedure requires alignment of the pulley set key to key groove with Special Service Tool: 09213-54015 (91651-60855), 09330-00021 for TMC made units to install the pulley bolt with 170 Nm torque (1,733 kgf-cm, 125 ft. lbs.) or for TMMK made units to use Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) with same torque specification. The next step entails fitting the fan and generator V belt with Special Service Tool: 09249-63010 then proceeding to install the engine mounting bracket No. 2 RH using 52 Nm torque (531 kgf-cm, 38 ft. lbs.) followed by the engine mounting stay No. 2 RH receiving 64 Nm torque (653 kgf-cm, 47 ft. lbs.). Mount the engine moving control rod with bracket onto the vehicle using three bolts and torquing them to 64 Nm (653 kgf-cm, 47 ft. lbs.). Reinstall the front wheel RH using a torque of 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.) followed by performing an oil leak inspection.
