Q: How to Replace the Crankshaft Seal in an Engine Assembly on 2002 Toyota Camry?
A: The first step to replace the crankshaft main bearing seal begins with separating the automatic transaxle assembly once the engine assembly with transaxle removal or by following the same procedure for manual transaxle assemblies. Use Special Service Tools: 09213-54015 (91651-60855), 09330-00021 (TMC made) and 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) (TMMK made) to fix the crankshaft and then extract the drive plate and ring gear sub-assembly from the automatic transaxle by removing eight bolts and the rear spacer and drive plate and front spacer. Using Special Service Tool: 09213-54015 (91651-60855), 09330-00021 fix the crankshaft before removing the 8 bolts and rear spacer and flywheel sub-assembly from the manual transaxle assembly. The engine rear oil seal removal process requires using a knife for cutting the oil seal lip followed by prying out the oil seal with a taped-tip screwdriver while checking for crankshaft damage and repairing it with #400 sandpaper when needed. The new engine rear oil seal installation requires the lip to receive MP grease before using Special Service Tool: 09223-15030, 09950-70010 (09951-07100) together with a hammer to fully seat it at the rear oil seal retainer while wiping off extraneous grease. The drive plate and ring gear sub-assembly installation requires fixing the crankshaft with the identical special service tools while cleaning all components and applying adhesive (Part No. 08833-00070, THREE BOND or equivalent) to 2 or 3 bolt threads before tightening the 8 bolts to 98 Nm (1,000 kgf-cm, 72 ft. lbs.). The 8 bolts of the flywheel sub-assembly need to be tightened to 130 Nm using a torque wrench set to 1,330 kgf-cm / 96 ft. lbs. after applying the cleaning procedures and adhesive coating method. Afterward, install the clutch disc assembly together with the clutch cover assembly and automatic or manual transaxle assembly depending on the configuration of the vehicle.
