2001 Toyota Sienna Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the brake caliper on 2001 Toyota Sienna?
A: The installation of brake caliper servicing starts with using a screwdriver to remove the cylinder boot set ring and cylinder boot. First put a piece of cloth between the piston and caliper before releasing the piston out of the cylinder with compressed air while maintaining safe distance from fingers. First use a screwdriver to evacuate the piston seal followed by extracting 2 sliding pins from the torque plate then install the sliding pin with sliding bushing into the bottom segment while putting the sliding pin without sliding bushing into the upper portion when reassembling. Use a screwdriver in combination with a hammer to tap out the 2 dust boots before using a 24 mm socket together with the hammer to install new dust boots. Ensure proper fitment of the metal plate part within the torque plate. The pad lining thickness must be measured by a ruler to ensure it meets standards where the standard is 11.0 mm (0.433 inch) and the minimum is 1.0 mm (0.039 inch); exchange the pad when it reaches minimum or shows significant wear. Identify disc thickness by using a micrometer measuring device to meet minimal values of 28.0 mm (1.102 inch) standard and 26.0 mm (1.024 inch) minimum requirements; degrade or mill the disc if it exhibits scoring or uneven surface damage and minimum measurement levels are reached. Check the disc runout with a dial indicator at 10 mm (0.39 inch) from edge while the maximum allowable runout is 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch). If this value exceeds the limit, check bearing and axle hub runouts and adjust or grind the disc when needed. To perform adjustments remove the bolts and torque plate on the knuckle followed by removing the hub nuts and disc before reinstalling the disc at a 1/5 turn backward from its initial setup position and torquing the hub nuts to 104 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 77 ft. lbs.). Continue the process of runout measurement until the minimum runout measures under 0.05 mm (0.0020). Install the disc at this position even if the minimum runout exceeds 0.05 mm (0.0020), then replace and retry the runout test. Featuring the torque plate install before torquing all the mounting bolts to 107 Nm (1,090 kgf-cm, 79 ft. lbs.). The reinstallation process occurs in opposite sequence to disassembly while technicians use lithium soap base glycol grease and disc brake grease for specific components.
