2001 Toyota Land Cruiser Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the axle shaft on 2001 Toyota Land Cruiser?
A: First service and repair work on the axle shaft starts with rear wheel removal at 131 Nm torque (1,340 kgf-cm and 97 ft. lbs. are also acceptable units). You must disconnect the brake line using Special Service Tool: 09023-00100 to remove the clip while using a torque of 15 Nm (150 kgf-cm, 11 ft. lbs.). The next step requires removal of the brake caliper and disc through unfastening two bolts along with washers using 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm and 76 ft. lbs.) torque. Use a dial indicator to check the bearing backlash and axle shaft deviation then replace all components when maximum backlash exceeds 0.6 mm (0.024 inch) or maximum deviation exceeds 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch). The technician should first remove the 4 nuts securing the axle shaft assembly while applying 123 Nm (1,250 kgf-cm, 91 ft. lbs.) of torque. The axle shaft assembly should be carefully extracted after which the technician must check the oil seal for damage and subsequently discard the O-ring inside the bearing case. You must attach 4 nuts to the serration bolts before hitting them with a hammer until they detach from the bearing retainer (differential side) and ABS speed sensor rotor. Do not reuse these nuts when disassembling. Start by grinding both surfaces of the retainer and sensor rotor followed by hammering out these components. The snap ring removal from the axle shaft requires the use of a snap ring expander while the axle shaft un-installs from the backing plate through a combination of washers and nuts and Special Service Tool: 09521-25011, 09521-25021 and a press. First use a brass bar and hammer to remove the oil deflector before extracting the outer oil seal through Special Service Tool: 09308-00010. Before proceeding, a hammer must be used to remove serration bolts from the bearing case followed by a press application to remove the rear axle bearing with Special Service Tool: 09950-60020 (09951-00810), 09950-70010 (09951-07100). Test the axle shaft for both shaft runout and flange runout that should not exceed 2.0 mm (0.079 inch) or 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch) respectively before replacing the shaft if it shows damage or wear. To install a new oil seal apply MP grease to the lip while using Special Service Tool: 09950-60020 (09951-00710), 09950-70010 (09951-07150) and a hammer. Reassembly requires the installation of the rear axle bearing with Special Service Tool: 09950-60020 (09951-00890) and a press followed by positioning the backing plate on the bearing case prior to screwing in the 4 serration bolts through the use of a press along with two socket wrenches. A new outer oil seal installation requires Special Service Tool: 09950-60020 (09951-00810), 09950-70010 (09951-07100), and a hammer to coat the oil seal lip with MP grease. First position an axle shaft with a new gasket and oil deflector followed by attaching a new washer and hub bolt nut before torquing the 5 hub bolts. Insert the axle shaft through the backing plate by first starting with a backing plate followed by a plate washer and bearing retainer then finish this step by using Special Service Tool: 09631-12090, 09950-60020 (09951-01030) and a press. Implement a new snap ring using a snap ring expander before setting the ABS speed sensor rotor along with its bearing retainer through Special Service Tool: 09631-12090, 09950-60020 (09951-01030) and a press. Establish the required length at 170.7 plus or minus 1.0 mm (6.720 plus or minus 0.039 inch). Installation proceeds in the opposite order of removal before filling the brake reservoir with fluid then bleeding the system while inspecting for leaks as well as checking the ABS speed sensor signal. Begin hub bolt replacement for the rear wheel by first removing the wheel followed by brake caliper and disc removal before securing the brake caliper during the process. Clamp a hub bolt with a brass bar then a new nut and washer while tightening the nut. Reinstall the disc alongside brake caliper using 2 bolts while applying a torque measurement of 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.) before securing the rear wheel with 131 Nm (1,340 kgf-cm, 97 ft. lbs.).
