2001 Toyota Echo Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the Brake Pad Set on 2001 Toyota Echo?
A: The pad replacement process starts by removing both front wheels followed by pad lining measurements from the caliper inspection hole. If the pads drop below 1.0 mm (0.039 inch) minimum thickness then replacement becomes necessary. The caliper lifting process starts with holding the sliding pin from the bottom to loosen and remove the installation bolt before suspending the caliper without disconnecting the flexible hose. Remove brake pads along with anti-squeal shims while carefully taking out the two pad support plates that will be re-used if they maintain original shape and show no degradation, cracking or wear and stay free from rust and all foreign substances. Disc thickness and runout measurements should be checked prior to placing the 2 pad support plates. The installation of new pads requires you must change both anti-squeal shims and pad wear indicator plates at the same time. Put disc brake grease only on anti-squeal shims before you put 2 shims on both outer and inner pads while installing the inner pad with its wear indicator plate facing up then putting the outer pad into position without any oil or grease touching the friction surfaces. To ease the piston insertion process you should both remove a small brake fluid portion from the reservoir and use either a hammer handle or equivalent tool to push the pilot then maybe loosen the bleeder plug when needed. After securing the installation bolt with 34 Nm (350 kgf-cm, 25 ft. lbs.) torque you must reinstall the front wheel before verifying the fluid level reaches the maximum line. During this process keep the sliding pin steady.
