2002 Toyota Echo Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the Brake Pad Set on 2002 Toyota Echo?
A: The procedure starts with wheel removal before checking pad lining thickness at the caliper's inspection hole because worn pads require replacement when their minimum threshold approaches 1.0 mm (0.039 inch). Lift the caliper through the sliding pin at its bottom while removing the installation bolt to suspend it securely even when keeping the flexible hose intact. Start the replacement process by discarding both brake pads and anti-squeal shims but salvaging the 2 pad support plates that remain usable if they pass the tests for deformation and cracks along with showing no rust or dust buildup. Verify the thickness and runout values of the disc before installing the 2 pad support plates back into position. New pads require installation with both anti-squeal shims and pad wear indicator plates at the same time. Prior to pad installation apply disc brake grease to the anti-squeal shims and then position 2 shims on the outer pad and another 2 shims on the inner pad by placing the inner pad with its pad wear indicator plate facing upward before installing the outer pad. Make sure no oil or grease touches the friction surfaces. Use a small amount of brake fluid from the reservoir during piston compression by hammer handle while possibly loosening the bleeder plug. Screw in the installation bolt to secure the caliper while holding the sliding pin before torquing it to 34 Nm (350 kgf-cm, 25 ft. lbs.). After replacing the front wheel you should verify that the liquid phase detects the top mark on the display.
