2001 Toyota Celica Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the front Brake Pad Set on 2001 Toyota Celica?
A: The first step for front brake pad replacement involves wheel removal followed by caliper inspection hole pad lining thickness check against the 1.0 mm (0.039 inch) minimum standard. Pad replacement is needed if the standard is not met. You must secure the caliper after raising it by keeping the sliding pin section while removing the bottom bolt to prevent flexible hose detachment. Two pads together with four anti-squeal shims and pad wear indicator plates should be removed while the two pad support plates can be used again if they have no deformation and cracks and are free of rust and debris. Inspect the disc thickness and runout then you must verify proper sequence when installing the two pad support plates. During pad replacement in both engine types always put new anti-squeal shims and pad wear indicator plates with the pads. The installation of new pads for the 2ZZ-GE and 1ZZ-FE engines requires use of disc brake grease to apply it both outside and inside at each inner anti-squeal shim position. The installation requires positioning the pads with the wear indicator plate facing upwards after installing both anti-squeal shims on each pad while excluding oil or grease from touching friction surfaces. Use a small brake fluid extract from the reservoir while pushing the piston using a hammer handle; additional effort may require unscrewing the bleeder plug to empty some fluid before piston insertion. Screw in the caliper and keep the sliding pin in place before securing installation bolts at 34 Nm (350 kgf-cm, 25 ft. lbs.). Reinstall the front wheel and tighten it to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). Repeat pressing the brake pedal multiple times before verifying that the fluid rests at the highest marked line in the reservoir.
