Q: How to Service a Shock Absorber in a Suspension Strut on 2001 Toyota Camry?
A: When servicing the suspension strut start by removing the rear side seatback together with the rear wheel to which you must apply 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.) torque when reattaching the wheel. Detach both the flexible hose and ABS speed sensor wire harness from the shock absorber by first removing two bolts and then removing the flexible hose bracket and ABS wire harness clamp while applying torque specifications of 29 Nm for the flexible hose and 5.5 Nm for the ABS wire. Proceed to remove the shock absorber with coil spring by loosening lower side nuts at 196 Nm for used nuts and 255 Nm for new nuts while applying engine oil to the nut threads for installation. Insert a jack under the rear axle carrier while you remove the cap to loosen the suspension support nut located in the center without removing it at a torque trajectory of 49 Nm (500 kgf-cm, 36 ft. lbs.). Lower the rear axle carrier after removing the 3 suspension support nuts with 39 Nm torque (400 kgf-cm or 29 ft. lbs.) and then take away the 2 bolts before taking out the shock absorber with the coil spring. When reinstalling the shock absorber reverse the previous removal sequence while inspecting the rear wheel alignment for proper alignment.
