2001 Toyota Camry Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the ball joint on 2001 Toyota Camry?
A: Start by disconnecting the steering knuckle with the axle hub and move on to the lower ball joint service and repair work. Begin by unscrewing the dust deflector with a screwdriver and then removing the cotter pin and nut. To take off the lower ball joint use Special Service Tool: 09628-62011 as directed. To inspect ball joint rotation you should move the ball joint five times before installing the nut followed by continuous nut tightening with a torque wrench at 2 to 4 second intervals taking the fifth reading in a range of 1.0 to 3.4 Nm (10 to 35 kgf-cm, 8.7 to 30 inch lbs). First secure the lower ball joint by tightening the nut to 123 Nm (1,250 kgf-cm) torque. Afterward replace the cotter pin with a new one. Appy new dust deflector while aligning sensor openings between the steering knuckle and ABS speed sensor parts with Special Service Tools: 09316-60011, 09316-00011, 09316-00041, and 09608-32010 plus a hammer. Install the steering knuckle back into place and measure the ABS sensor output plus front wheel alignment.
