    Q:
How to service and repair the ball joint on Toyota Avalon? Posted by Customer
    A:
Service of the ball joint begins with removing the front axle hub before proceeding with lower ball joint removal through dust deflector screwdriver removal and subsequent cotter pin and nut removal. Service Tool 09628-62011 serves as the extraction method for the lower ball joint. The ball joint examination requires the knurling of the ball joint stud 5 times in reverse direction then forward direction before securing the nut. Meanwhile, the torque wrench enables a continuous 2-4 second turning period with the torque measurement recorded at the 5th turn. The recommended torque span is from 1.0 to 3.4 Nm (10 - 35 kgf-cm, 8.7 - 30 inch lbs.). The first step is to install the lower ball joint along with the nut while applying torque at 123 Nm (1,250 kgf-cm, 90 ft. lbs.). After that, put a new cotter pin in place before tightening the nut at 60 degrees when the holes do not align for the pin. The installation of a fresh dust deflector requires Special Service Tools which include 09316-60011 (09316-00011, 09316-00041), 09608-32010 along with a hammer for precise alignment of the holes that connect the ABS speed sensor to the dust deflector and steering knuckle. To complete the installation you must reinstall the front axle hub and verify the ABS speed sensor signal and front wheel alignment while steering angle sensor zero point calibration is required if VSC is present on the vehicle.

    Q:
How to replace the lower ball joint assembly on the front left side on Toyota Camry? Posted by Customer
    A:
Start the front left lower ball joint assembly replacement by taking out the front wheel and front axle hub LH nut through the use of Special Service Tool: 09930-00010. The replacement process starts with disconnecting the speed sensor front LH (with ABS) components before proceeding to disconnect the front disc brake caliper assembly LH and front disc. Proceed by using Special Service Tool: 09620-62011 to remove the tie rod assembly LH and then detach the front suspension arm sub-assembly lower No.1 LH. Remove the front axle assembly LH by using Special Service Tool: 09628-62011 and then detach the lower ball joint assembly front LH with the tool. The technician should test the lower ball joint assembly front LH by operating the ball joint stud five times forwards and backwards before tightening the nut. The wrench torque settings should cover 0.98 - 3.43 Nm (10 - 35 kgf-cm, 8.7 - 30 inch lbs.). Begin installation with the lower ball joint assembly front LH then proceed to install the front axle LH after which add the front suspension arm sub-assembly lower No.1 LH followed by the tie rod assembly LH. The front disc brake caliper assembly LH accompanies the front disc and speed sensor front LH (with ABS). The front axle hub LH nut should be secured with a torque of 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). The last tasks include front wheel alignment inspection together with the ABS speed sensor signal assessment.
