Camshaft Position Sensor, Driver Side

The first step for Camshaft Position Sensor removal from the 2ZR-FE engine control system is removing the No. 2 cylinder head cover. The first step is disconnecting the duty vacuum switching valve connector then removing the three engine wire harness clamps on the exhaust camshaft side. Start by removing both bolts that secure the camshaft position sensor at the exhaust camshaft side and the intake camshaft side respectively.

The first step for installing the Exhaust Side Camshaft Position Sensor includes applying engine oil to its O-ring while inspecting it for damage and any sign of lockage. Use Toyota Genuine Adhesive 1344 or Three Bond 1344 or its equivalent to apply adhesive to two or three threads of the bolt. Begin sensor installation by screwing the bolt then tight it to 10 Nm (102 kgf-cm, 7 ft-lbf) before attaching the sensor connector. The process for the Intake Side mirrors the Exhaust Side procedure by applying engine oil to the O-ring followed by adhesive on bolt threads then installing the sensor with the same torque level and finishing with sensor connector attachment. Perform an inspection for oil leakage after completing the installation steps. Place the No. 1 Engine Cover Sub-Assembly as the final step of the procedure.

Installation of the Exhaust Side Camshaft Position Sensor requires applying engine oil to its O-ring before ensuring proper placement with no O-ring cracks. A thin layer of selected adhesives - Toyota Genuine Adhesive 1344 or Three Bond 1344 or equivalent should be applied to 2 or 3 threads of the bolt. Install the sensor along with its bolt while tightening it to achieve 10 Nm (102 kgf-cm, 7 ft-lbf) torque before connecting the sensor connector. To install the sensor on the Intake Side you should apply engine oil to the O-ring and use adhesive on the bolt threads before installing the sensor with a bolt torque setting at 10 Nm (102 kgf-cm, 7 ft-lbf) and connecting the sensor connector. Once the inspection reveals no oil leakage the No. 1 Engine Cover Sub-Assembly needs to be installed.

It monitors the position and rotational speed of the crankshaft.

Connect the crankshaft position sensor connector.

Connect the crankshaft position sensor connector.

Inspect for any oil leaks and proceed to install the No. 2 cylinder head cover.

Remove the generator assembly.

Install the timing belt cover sub-assembly No. 3 LH.

Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor connector and remove the bolt to take out the crankshaft position sensor.

Install the camshaft position sensor with the bolt, torquing it to 9.0 N.m (90 kgf.cm, 80 in.lbf), and reconnect the camshaft position sensor connector.

Connect the cable to the negative battery terminal, noting that some systems may require initialization after reconnecting the cable.

Apply a light coat of engine oil to the O-ring of the new crankshaft position sensor.

Apply a light coat of engine oil to the O-ring of the new crankshaft position sensor, install it with the bolt, and torque to 10 Nm (102 kgf.cm, 7 ft.lbf).

Reinstall the cooler compressor assembly, the generator assembly, and the fan and generator V belt.

Connect the crankshaft position sensor connector.

Install the sensor using the bolt, ensuring a torque of 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 in-lbf).

Remove the bolt to disconnect the suction hose subassembly, then disconnect the cooler compressor assembly connector, and remove the 4 bolts to detach the cooler compressor assembly from the V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly.

Connect the 3 engine wire harness clamps and the duty vacuum switching connector for the exhaust camshaft side.

Remove the bolt to take out the camshaft position sensor on the intake camshaft side.

Remove the bolt securing the crankshaft position sensor.

Remove the No. 1 engine cover sub-assembly.

Disconnect the radiator hose outlet, the No. 1 cooler refrigerant suction hose, and the No. 1 cooler refrigerant discharge hose.

Install the air cleaner cap sub-assembly.

Connect the camshaft position sensor connector.

Inspect for oil leaks and then install the No. 1 engine cover sub-assembly.

Inspect for oil leaks and then install the No. 1 Engine Cover Sub-Assembly.

Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal.

Install the generator assembly, then the fan.

Apply a light coat of engine oil to the O-rings on the No. 1 crank position sensors.

First, remove the engine under cover on the right-hand side.

Connect the No. 1 Cooler Refrigerant Discharge Hose, the No. 1 Cooler Refrigerant Suction Hose, and the Radiator Hose Outlet.

Remove the bolt, separate the suction hose sub-assembly, disconnect the cooler compressor assembly connector, and remove the 4 bolts to detach the cooler compressor assembly from the V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly.

Secure the sensor using the bolt with a torque of 10 Nm (102 kgf-cm, 7 ft-lbf) and connect the sensor connector.

Ensure the O-ring is not cracked or jammed.

Remove the connector clamp and take out the wire harness from the wire harness clamp bracket.

Apply a light coat of engine oil to the O-ring.

Connect the crankshaft position sensor connector.

Remove the engine under cover on the right-hand side and the V-ribbed belt.

Disconnect the sensor connector, remove the connector clamp, and take out the wire harness from the wire harness clamp bracket.

Disconnect the sensor connector, then remove the bolt and the sensor.

Apply adhesive to 2 or 3 threads of the bolt using Toyota Genuine Adhesive 1344, Three Bond 1344, or an equivalent.

Next, install the Camshaft Position Sensor with the bolt, also torqued to 10 Nm (102 kgf-cm, 7 ft-lbf), and connect the sensor connector.

Remove the No. 1 engine cover and the air cleaner cap.

Remove the sensor itself.

Separate the cooler condenser assembly and remove the radiator assembly and fan assembly with motor.

Install the camshaft position sensor with the bolt, also torqued to 10 Nm (102 kgf-cm, 7 ft-lbf), and connect the sensor connector.

Install the No. 3 timing belt cover sub-assembly LH, connect the No. 1 radiator hose, and install the drive belt.

Install the wire harness and the crankshaft position sensor connector clamp, followed by connecting the crankshaft position sensor connector.

Install the Crankshaft Position Sensor Protector with the 2 bolts, also torqued to 10 Nm (102 kgf-cm, 7 ft-lbf).

Proceed to install the camshaft position sensor with the bolt and stud bolt, torqued to 7.5 Nm (80 kgf-cm, 66 in-lbf).

Install the air cleaner cap sub-assembly with hose.

Remove the sensor itself.

Install the sensor using the bolt, torquing it to 9.0 Nm (90 kgf-cm, 80 in-lbf).

Remove the No. 1 Engine Cover Sub-assembly.

Apply a light coat of engine oil to the O-ring on the sensor.

Install it with the bolt and torque to 9.0 Nm (92 kgf.cm, 80 in. lbs.).

Remove the front fender apron seal on the right-hand side by using a clip remover to take out the clip, followed by removing the 2 bolts and the seal itself.

Proceed to install the No. 1 engine under cover.

Disconnect the camshaft position sensor connector.

Secure the crankshaft position sensor with a torque of 8.0 N.m (80 kgf.cm, 71 in.lbf).

Reinstall the generator and the engine under cover.

Reinstall the front fender apron seal on the right-hand side.

Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal and wait at least 90 seconds after turning off the ignition switch.

Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal.

Install the camshaft position sensor using the bolt, ensuring a torque of 8.5 Nm (87 kgf-cm, 75 in-lbf) is achieved, while making sure that the O-ring is not cracked or jammed during installation.

The fan and generator V belt.

Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal.

Disconnect the sensor connector, then remove the bolt and the sensor.

The fan and generator V belt.

A light coat of engine oil.

Apply a light coat of engine oil to the O-ring on the sensor.

Connect the crankshaft position sensor connector and the 2 wire harness clamps.

Apply a light coat of engine oil to the O-ring of the sensor.

Ensure that the O-ring is not cracked or jammed.

Remove the sensor itself.

Install the compressor and magnetic clutch (w/ air conditioning), followed by the fan and generator V belt (w/ air conditioning).

Remove the engine under cover sub-assembly No.1.

Inspect for any oil leaks.

Install the compressor and magnetic clutch, followed by the fan and generator belt.

Remove the idle pulley assembly with bracket by taking out the 5 bolts.

Apply a light coat of engine oil to the O-ring.
