The Toyota Prius A/C Compressor Clutch only uses the air conditioning compressor when cooling is requested and the belt drive is connected to the compressor via an electrically magnetized drum. It does not add additional drag to the engine during normal driving. When the A/C switch is on, the internal drum is a magnet that pulls the pulley close to the compressor hub to initiate rotation and flow of the refrigerant immediately. When current stops, the drum is free to spin. A correctly functioning Prius A/C Compressor Clutch maintains cabin temperatures comfortably, allows the Toyota powertrain to achieve fuel economy, and eliminates avoidable loading. Wearing, slipping, or sticking may undermine cooling, chew the drive belt, or even tear the A/C Compressor Clutch apart. While too much heat, lack of oil in the system, excessive system pressure, or low coil voltage may melt bearing lubricant and distort the compressor nose, a replacement A/C Compressor Clutch can be ruined in no time unless underlying problems are corrected. The parts are sold as separate clutches, complete compressor-clutch assemblies, or kits that can be supplied either as new or remanufactured, guaranteeing Toyota reliability and the usual Prius efficiency while protecting against repeat A/C Compressor Clutch failure in every Prius model and preserving long-term comfort.

Toyota Prius A/C Compressor Clutch Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the A/C Compressor Clutch on Toyota Prius?
    A:
A process for compressor clutch servicing starts with complete disassembly of the parts. You must remove the pressure plate through this combination of tools: Special Service Tool 07112-76050 combined with a socket wrench when uninstalling the shaft bolt according to a torque standard of 13.2 N.m (135 kgf.cm, 9 ft.lbf). Using Special Service Tool: 07112-76040 on the pressure plate will enable socket wrench use with 07112-76050, 07112-66040 to remove the pressure plate and retrieve the shims from the shaft. The snap ring must be removed for rotor removal to follow but the reinstallation should position the beveled snap ring edge upward. A plastic hammer allows for rotor removal from the shaft without harming the pulley during the process. Before you remove the stator disconnect the connector while also removing the screw and stator lead wire followed by taking off the snap ring (which needs to have its beveled side facing up during reassembly) and then the stator can be extracted. The reassembly process requires following steps in the opposite sequence used for disassembly. The standard placement of the magnetic clutch clearance requires connecting the lead wire to the positive (+) terminal then measuring the plate and rotor gap by connecting the negative (-) terminal to the battery while using the dial indicator in its correct position against the pressure plate. The target clearance stands at 0.5 plus or minus 0.15 mm (0.020 plus or minus 0.0059 in.). The correct clearance level stands at 0.5 plus or minus 0.15 mm which equates to 0.020 plus or minus 0.0059 inches. To reach the standard clearance insert shims with thicknesses of 0.1 mm (0.004 in.), 0.3 mm (0.012 in.) or 0.5 mm (0.020 in.) into the clearance system when the measurement is beyond the required range.
