Toyota Echo Brake Pads are the main friction elements that decelerate and arrest the vehicle by pushing against the brake rotor. The pads have a steel backing plate bonded to a special friction lining. As the caliper closes the pair together on each side of the rotor, kinetic energy is transduced to heat, halting the Echo. Since the lining on the Brake Pads wears out with normal driving, Toyota provides a minimum thickness that should be observed to operate safely. Many Echo models have wear sensors or built-in indicators that produce a warning sound when the Brake Pads are near this limit to alert the driver to make arrangements to have them replaced before performance is impaired. Each front rotor is usually supplied with two Brake Pads, and the balanced design of the pads helps to spread the pressure uniformly to prevent heat accumulation and fade on the pads when applied normally in Toyota commuting or errands. Periodic inspection is done to maintain Echo braking, and installation of new Brake Pads is done in time to keep the system at Toyota stopping standards.

Toyota Echo Brake Pads Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the Brake Pads on Toyota Echo?
    A:
The minimal pad lining thickness for changeout is 1.0 mm (0.039 inch). Before the pad replacement you must remove the wheel along with inspecting pad lining through the caliper inspection hole. Raise the caliper while pinning the bottom sliding knob and unscrew the bolt then securely tie the caliper until hose removal. The brake pads removal process should include both the anti-squeal shims and pad support plates. These parts might be reusable when they remain free of both deformation and wear and show no signs of cracks or rust and dirt or foreign particles presence. Inspection of disc thickness and runout must happen before adding back the 2 pad support plates. The installation of new pads requires both anti-squeal shims and pad wear indicator plates to be installed at the same time with the pads. Disc brake grease needs to be applied onto the anti-squeal shims before you install two outer shims followed by two inner shims with the inner pad containing the pad wear indicator plate placed in the upward position. When installing the pads position them so no oil or grease touches the friction areas. Use a small amount of brake fluid to drain from the reservoir while using a hammer handle and similar tool for pressing the piston in (loosening the bleeder plug when needed). Next, install the caliper while securing it by holding the sliding pin and tightening the installation bolt to 34 Nm (350 kgf-cm, 25 ft. lbs.). Place the front wheel on and verify that fluid extends to the maximum line.
