2009 Toyota Tundra Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Remove the Cylinder Head Gasket on 2009 Toyota Tundra?
A: The first procedure for pulling a cylinder head gasket from a 1GR-FE engine requires initial removal of the complete engine unit from the car. You must remove sequentially the ignition coil assembly with spark plug and VVT sensor together with the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly. The procedure begins with sub-assembly removal of the RH and LH cylinder head covers and the engine oil level dipstick guide and heater water pipe sub-assembly which requires disconnecting three water hoses and unbolting two parts. You must disconnect the engine coolant temperature sensor connector followed by removing the rear water by-pass joint as well as 2 bolts and 4 nuts and 2 gaskets to extract the O-ring from the No. 1 water outlet pipe. The service engineer must separate the oil control valve filter from the other components including the V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly and the No. 2 idler pulley sub-assembly and the No. 1 idler pulley sub-assembly and crankshaft pulley and the No. 2 oil pan sub-assembly and oil strainer sub-assembly and the oil pan sub-assembly. The technician disconnects both the No. 2 oil cooler hose and oil cooler hose before proceeding to remove the water inlet housing and the oil filter bracket sub-assembly and the timing chain cover sub-assembly. Take off the front crankshaft oil seal before positioning the No. 1 cylinder to TDC/compression. The service technician must remove the No. 1 chain tensioner assembly along with the chain tensioner slipper, No. 1 idle gear shaft, and the two parts of chain: a No. 2 chain vibration damper and a No. 1 chain. The service technician should also remove camshaft timing gears and a No. 2 chain. When handling the No. 1 and No. 2 camshafts avoid any damage by maintaining their level position. You should first loosen the specified bolts on the 16 bearing caps and then remove the 8 bearing caps with their corresponding 2 camshafts. A 10 mm bi-hexagon wrench should be used to equally loosen the 8 cylinder head bolts in proper order before removing the bolts and plate washers to lift the cylinder head off dowels on the cylinder block and set it on wooden blocks. The contact surfaces between the cylinder head and block need careful handling and if required you should gently pry between them using a screwdriver. The mechanic should first remove the No. 1 and No. 2 camshaft bearings before removing the cylinder head gasket.
