2009 Toyota Highlander Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Properly Replace an Oil Filter on 2009 Toyota Highlander?
A: The initial step for replacing an oil filter includes opening the oil filler cap followed by removing the oil pan drain plug alongside its gasket to allow the oil to drain into a storage container. The oil pan drain plug requires installation with a new gasket followed by 40 Nm (408 kgf-cm, 30 ft-lbf) torque. Once you link a 15 mm diameter (0.591 in.) hose to the pipe and pull out the oil filter drain plug you can install the pipe onto the oil filter cap. The procedure to follow is draining all oil from the filter while disconnecting the pipe and successfully removing the needed O-ring. Special Service Tool: 09228-06501 should be used to extract the oil filter cap with its clip intact while removing the oil filter element and O-ring yet the cap O-ring requires manual removal to prevent damage. To install the oil filter cap requires cleaning all components inside before applying engine oil to a new O-ring which should be positioned on the cap before assembly. Position a new oil filter element into the cap then cleanse the engine surface where installation will occur while lubricating the O-ring with engine oil before performing a temporary installation of the oil filter cap which must not trap the O-ring. Install the oil filter cap with Special Service Tool: 09228-06501 by tightening it up to 25 Nm (255 kgf-cm, 18 ft-lbf) to achieve proper secure installation. First apply oil to the drain plug O-ring before installing it to the oil filter cap. Clean all the installation surface from dirt before installing the oil filter drain plug by torquing it to 13 Nm (127 kgf-cm, 10 ft-lbf) while making sure the ring avoids getting caught. Serving personnel should measure the correct amount of specified oil before installing the oil filler cap on the engine. Last step involves starting the engine while looking for any leaking oil from serviced regions.
