2009 Toyota Highlander Brake Master Cylinder Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and replace the brake master cylinder on 2009 Toyota Highlander?
A: You should depress the brake pedal several times to release vacuum from the booster before you detach the brake master cylinder sub-assembly from its position on the brake booster assembly. Two nuts must be removed to separate the ejector tube during 1AR-FE engine procedures. Move on to removing the front wiper arm and blade assembly from both left and right sides before proceeding to detach the cowl top ventilator louver sub-assembly, windshield wiper motor along with its link, and outer cowl top panel sub-assembly. Leave the brake fluid within the system and slide the clip before detaching the No. 1 reservoir tube from the brake master reservoir assembly. A 12 mm union nut wrench enables disconnecting the brake lines which run through the brake master cylinder sub-assembly. Complete the removal by disconnecting the sub-assembly with its attached 2 nuts prior to extracting the O-ring. Proper handling of the master cylinder is vital because impacts should be avoided and any dropped master cylinders must receive a replacement. Master cylinders need to be positioned either as a flat horizontal surface or pointing downward during changes to stop the piston from dislodging. The master cylinder piston requires cleaning with no shop rag or cloth while applying an even layer of lithium soap base glycol grease but excluding other forms of grease or fluid during this process.
