- Q: How to install the parking brake cable for the rear drum brake on 2009 Toyota Corolla?A: Installation of the rear drum brake parking brake cable starts with engaging both claws for linking a new No. 3 parking brake cable clamp on to the No. 3 parking brake cable assembly. The process begins with attaching the new No. 3 parking brake cable clamp to its assembly using 2 bolts torqued to 6.0 Nm (61 kgf-cm, 53 in-lbf). Insert the assembly into the body while securely bolting it with another bolt at the same torque. Begin by tightening the first bolt that connects the assembly to the backing plate to 8.0 Nm (82 kgf-cm, 71 in-lbf) before moving on to a second bolt tightened to 6.0 Nm (61 kgf-cm, 53 in-lbf). Finally, mount the clamp to the assembly prior to installing the No. 3 parking brake cable clamp. Installation orders include the rear brake shoe for the rear side followed by the rear brake strut set then the rear brake shoe for the front side. The mechanic should inspect the brake drums at the rear before installing both parts. First install the front No. 2 floor heat insulator by torquing its 2 nuts to 5.5 Nm (56 kgf-cm, 49 in-lbf) and after that add the front No. 1 floor heat insulator with 3 nuts at this exact torque. Install the front exhaust pipe assembly after putting on the No. 1 parking brake cable assembly together with the parking brake cable end stopper the parking brake equalizer and parking brake lever assembly. Finish the parking brake equalizer connection then install both the No. 3 and No. 2 belt anchor reinforcement sub-assemblies. Inspection of rear drum brake shoe clearance alongside the necessary adjustment of parking brake travel measure. To complete the task connect the cable to the negative battery terminal while inspecting the SRS warning light followed by checking for exhaust gas leaks then installing the rear wheels with proper torque of 103 Nm (1050 kgf-cm, 76 ft-lbf).
