2009 Toyota Avalon Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to install the park/neutral safety switch assembly for the U660E automatic transaxle on 2009 Toyota Avalon?
A: The assembly installation of the U660E automatic transaxle park/neutral position switch requires first positioning the shift lever at N and then aligning its protrusions. Attach the switch to the control shaft by using two bolts that must be tightened to 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 in-lbf). The installer should first wipe away dirt along with rust from the control shaft's installation site while maintaining the switch absolutely straight to stop the plate spring from warping which would block proper reinstallation. Installation of the switch requires verification of protrusion alignment followed by a connection to its connector. The transmission control cable assembly needs a fresh clip before installation onto the transmission control cable bracket. Then install the control shaft lever together with the cable assembly onto the control shaft using a nut and washer and exert 13 Nm (133 kgf-cm, 10 ft-lbf) torque. The installation process requires stopping at the No. 1 air cleaner inlet before removing and replacing the air cleaner case and joining the air cleaner cap with its hose and applying the No. 2 air cleaner inlet followed by the cool air intake duct seal. The cable needs to be connected to the negative battery terminal before inspectors should check the park/neutral position switch assembly and shift lever position with proper adjustments when needed.
