2009 Scion xD Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove the camshaft on 2009 Scion xD?
A: The first step to remove the camshaft in a 2ZR-FE engine requires the driver to discharge fuel system pressure followed by removing the battery and battery tray and front wheels and engine under covers alongside draining the engine coolant and oil. You must separate the front wiper arm head cap and dismantle both front wiper arm components with its blades while removing the hood to cowl top seal and cowl top ventilator louver sub-assembly before taking out the outer cowl top panel. Begin your camshaft removal by taking out the air cleaner assembly together with air cleaner bracket followed by battery carrier and No. 2 cylinder head cover while next removing the fan & generator V belt, No. 2 radiator hose before disconnecting the front bumper cover plus oil cooler hoses (No. 1 outlet and No. 2 inlet). The repair technician must first remove the hood lock assembly together with No. 1 cooler cover and upper radiator support absorber, radiator support sub-assembly and the radiator assembly. You should remove the pulley compressor assembly together with transmission control cable assemblies for automatic and manual transaxles, union to check valve hose and feed hose for the fuel vapor and engine wire, heater water outlet hose A and inlet A along with the fuel tube sub-assembly and clutch release cylinder assembly for manual transaxle. The service technician must detach the column hole cover silencer sheet together with steering sliding yoke sub-assembly, No. 1 steering column hole cover sub-assembly, shift lever knob sub-assembly (for manual transaxle), console panel upper, console box cover rear, console box carpet, rear console box assembly, front console box, front floor brace center, front exhaust pipe assembly, and front axle shaft nuts (LH and RH). The repair process begins with separating speed sensors from both front locations and tie rod end components from left and right sides along with front stabilizer links and front lower suspension arms from their right and left positions. The mechanic must remove the front axle assemblies (LH and RH) together with the engine assembly with transaxle along with the front suspension crossmember sub-assembly and the oil cooler tubes (No. 1 inlet and outlet). The technician should start by removing the transmission oil level gauge sub-assembly before separating the transmission oil filler tube sub-assembly. The task also includes removal of the intake manifold along with the oil level dipstick, oil level gauge guide, generator assembly, and fan belt adjusting bar. The procedure demands disassembly of water inlet hose from No. 3 water by-pass hose followed by removal of water inlet, thermostat, ignition coil assembly, radio setting condenser and No. 2 ventilation hose along with air tube assembly and cylinder head cover sub-assembly. Set No. 1 cylinder at TDC/compression then detach the crankshaft pulley followed by the removal of the No. 1 chain tensioner assembly and timing chain or belt cover sub-assembly with timing chain or belt cover oil seal. Check the lock first then release the lock pin while sealing the VVT oil hole before using air pressure to remove the flange bolt and holding the hexagonal camshaft portion. The camshaft timing exhaust gear assembly should be removed in the same way after which you can extract the camshaft bearing cap by systematically loosening and removing the bolts followed by removing the camshaft and No. 2 camshaft. Carefully pry off the camshaft housing sub-assembly after removing all its bolts while separating the No. 1 and No. 2 camshaft bearings and the camshaft housing sub-assembly.
