2008 Toyota Yaris Camshaft Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to remove the camshaft on 2008 Toyota Yaris?
A: The procedure for removing the camshaft from a 1NZ-FE engine starts with battery terminal cable removal followed by removal of the engine under cover from the right-hand side. Begin by removing the cylinder head cover No. 2 along with ignition coil No. 1 and disconnect both ventilation hoses. The sequence to remove the camshaft involves removal of the cylinder head cover sub-assembly along with the fan and generator V belt then the engine mounting insulator sub-assembly RH. Rotate the crankshaft damper 40 degrees counterclockwise from TDC when removing No. 2 camshaft while aligning its timing notch with the matching mark on the timing chain cover to avoid damaging piston-valves. To reach TDC/Compression for the no. 1 cylinder position the crankshaft damper with its timing notch aligned to the oil pump timing mark "0". This action properly positions the camshaft timing sprocket and gear with their faces pointing upward. Proceed with turning the crankshaft once more to achieve total rotation before aligning the marks. Start by marking the timing marks on the chain and access it using an 8 mm hexagon wrench to remove its screw plug. You need to use a screwdriver in the service hole of the chain tensioner to lift the stopper plate and follow by rotating camshaft Number 2 clockwise to make the plunger of the chain tensioner enter. Affix a 3 mm (0.12 in.) diameter bar to the stopper plate when rotating the camshaft slightly then fasten it with tape. Apply a wrench to the hexagonal lobe of camshaft No. 2 to remove the flange bolt before proceeding to evenly loosen and remove the 11 bearing cap bolts in sequence to take out camshaft bearing caps No. 1 and No. 2. First remove the flange bolt along with the camshaft timing sprocket before extracting camshaft No. 2. Use the same order of procedure to uniformly untighten and remove 8 bearing cap bolts from the remaining camshaft before removing it with your hands together with its camshaft timing gear assembly while tying the chain with string. Place the camshaft in a vise yet protect it from damage and tape the 4 cam journal oil paths while punching holes in the tape above the advance and retard oil paths. Utilize an air stream at 150 kPa (1.5 kgf cm2) to enter the damaged paths through which a shop rag must cover the paths to stop oil from spraying out. During air pressure reduction on the timing retard path confirm that the camshaft timing gear assembly moves forward in the timing advance direction. During the most advanced position of the camshaft timing gear apply air pressure into the timing retard side path first then to the timing advance side path to prevent sudden shifts that could damage the lock pin. You need to first remove the flange bolt and the camshaft timing gear assembly except the other four bolts. If you plan to use the lock pin from the camshaft timing gear assembly, you must also perform its unlocking operation.
