2007 Toyota Yaris Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service the camshaft on 2007 Toyota Yaris?
A: The procedure for servicing the camshaft begins with disconnecting the negative battery cable and removing engine under cover RH and cylinder head cover No. 2. The service starts with removing Ignition Coil No. 1 followed by disconnecting ventilation hoses before taking off the cylinder head cover sub-assembly. First remove the fan and generator V belt before taking off the engine mounting insulator sub-assembly RH followed by No. 2 camshaft. Before camshaft rotation during timing chain removal it is essential to position the crankshaft damper at 40 degrees below TDC counterclockwise while matching its timing notch to the timing chain cover mark for piston-valve protection. The crankshaft damper alignment for TDC/compression requires the user to adjust it to have the timing notch pointing at the oil pump timing mark "0" while both camshaft timing sprocket and gear must face upward. A screw plug should be extracted with an 8 mm hexagon wrench while pulling the stopper plate of the chain tensioner upward with a screwdriver after marking the chain at its timing positions. Using clockwise rotation on camshaft No. 2 pushes the chain tensioner plunger inside before securing the stopper plate through application of a 3 mm diameter bar. Loosen the 11 bearing cap bolts uniformly during the removal of bearing caps No. 1 and No. 2 before removing the camshaft timing sprocket along with camshaft No. 2. The camshaft timing gear assembly needs to be placed in a vise while tape covers the oil paths and air pressure through a punctured tape proves the gear moves correctly in advanced timing directions. The camshaft timing gear assembly must be adjusted correctly to the camshaft before tightening the flange bolt to 64 N m (653 kgf cm, 47 ft. lbf) while releasing the locking mechanism from the assembly. After applying engine oil to the camshaft, workers must align the timing markings before torquing bearing cap bolts to 13 N m (129 kgf cm, 9.4 ft. lbf) for No. 2 cap and 23 N m (235 kgf cm, 17 ft. lbf) for No. 1. You need to install the flange bolt for camshaft No. 2 using Special Service Tool: 09023-38400 before torquing it to 64 N m (653 kgf cm, 47 ft. lbf). Wash off the bar from the timing chain tensioner and position the crankshaft damper timing notch opposite the oil pump timing mark "0" before verifying all marking alignment. The 8 mm hexagon wrench helps to install the screw plug with adhesive-treated threads by achieving 15 N m of torque (153 kgf cm, 11 ft. lbf). The procedure ends by performing valve clearance inspection then adding the engine mounting insulator sub-assembly RH followed by the fan and generator V belt and cylinder head cover sub-assembly with ventilation hose and ignition coil reconnections before attaching the negative battery terminal at 5.4 N m (55 kgf cm, 48 in. lbf) torque while checking for oil leakage and inserting both cylinder head cover No. 2 and engine under cover RH.
