2007 Toyota Yaris Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the timing chain on 2007 Toyota Yaris?
A: You must start the timing chain service by disconnecting battery cable from negative terminal alongside removing front wheel right and engine under cover right. First drain all engine oil and coolant followed by separating the cylinder head cover No. 2 together with the fan and generator V belt, generator assembly, ignition coil No. 1 and both ventilation hoses. To access the components, remove the cylinder head cover sub-assembly together with engine mounting insulator sub-assembly RH, crankshaft damper sub-assembly, crankshaft position sensor, camshaft timing oil control valve assembly and water pump pulley, water pump assembly, transverse engine mounting bracket, oil pump assembly, oil pump seal, and chain tensioner assembly No. 1. While removing the chain tensioner assembly keep the crankshaft from rotating. The chain tensioner assembly demands stopper plate upward movement to unlock the plunger which then needs pushing in before locking to proceed with removal. Start by disconnecting the chain tensioner slipper along with the chain vibration damper No. 1 before extracting the chain sub-assembly. Measure the chain sub-assembly length under 140 N (14.3 kgf, 31.5 lb) force then change it when elongation reaches 123.2 mm (4.850 in.). Installation requires that all timing marks must be at TDC while setting the crankshaft timing mark between 40 and 140 degrees ATDC. Disassemble and check the position of the camshaft timing gear and sprocket at 20 degrees. ATDC. Fasten chain vibration damper No. 1 with a torque setting of 9.0 N m (92 kgf cm, 80 in. lbf) while aligning the timing marks before installing the timing chain. Fitting the chain tensioner slipper along with assembly No. 1 requires the identical torque value. The installation sequence starts with the oil pump seal which precedes the oil pump assembly followed by the transverse engine mounting bracket then the water pump assembly after which the water pump pulley and camshaft timing oil control valve assembly and crankshaft position sensor must be installed before finishing with the crankshaft damper sub-assembly then engine mounting insulator sub-assembly RH and finally cylinder head cover sub-assembly. Proceed with connecting both ventilation hoses, installing ignition coil No. 1 and generator assembly and fan and generator V belt while following protocol for adjusting and subsequently inspecting the belt. The negative battery terminal requires a torque of 5.4 N m (55 kgf cm, 48 in. lbf) for cable connection while engine oil and coolant are added before cylinder head cover No. 2, engine under cover RH, and front wheel RH installation at 103 N m (1050 kgf cm, 76 ft. lbf).
