2009 Toyota Yaris Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove the camshaft on 2009 Toyota Yaris?
A: The first step for camshaft removal from the 1NZ-FE engine requires users to disconnect the negative battery cable and remove both the engine under cover RH. The procedure starts by removing cylinder head cover No. 2 and ignition coil No. 1 to proceed with ventilation hoses disconnection. The first step requires the removal of the cylinder head cover sub-assembly followed by disposing of the fan and generator V belt. Then the engine mounting insulator sub-assembly RH needs to be taken off. The timing notch for the crankshaft damper should be turned 40 degrees counterclockwise from TDC while you position it to match the timing chain cover mark to stop piston-valve collision during No. 2 camshaft removal. The first crankshaft timing notch must point at oil pump "0" while aligning with the compression mark of cylinder No. 1 to ensure the camshaft timing sprocket and gear display upward positions. Full crankshaft rotation is needed if either alignment is off. Apply an 8mm hexagon wrench to detach the screw plug after you mark the chain at its timing marks. Feeding a screwdriver into the service slot of the chain tensioner allows you to raise the stopper plate before rotating Camshaft No. 2 clockwise which pushes the plunger forward. Secure the stopper plate with a 3 mm diameter bar during camshaft rotation with slight motion. Start the process by removing the flange bolt followed by loosening the 11 bearing cap bolts equally while abiding by the specified sequence and then taking off camshaft bearing caps No. 1 and No. 2. Proceed by disassembling the flange bolt along with the camshaft timing sprocket before extracting camshaft No. 2. The procedure for removing the camshaft includes a step-by-step method to loosen and remove the 8 bearing cap bolts in order of sequence and then remove camshaft bearing cap No. 2 while maintaining camshaft level position. Wrapping the camshaft along with timing gear assembly in a string after holding the chain by hand. The procedure for removing the camshaft timing gear assembly includes clamping the camshaft into a vise without harming it while taping the 4 oil paths of the cam journal and producing holes in the tape over the advance and retard oil paths. Use 150 kPa of air pressure in the broken paths to test the camshaft timing gear assembly so it turns in timing advance direction when air pressure on the timing retard path decreases. To prevent a broken lock pin carefully control the pressure release on both paths before removing the flange bolt and the camshaft timing gear assembly but avoid disassembling the other 4 bolts or unlocking the pin inside the gearing if you will reuse this equipment.
