2008 Toyota Sienna Rack And Pinion Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to disassemble the power steering rack and pinion gear on 2008 Toyota Sienna?
A: The first step for disassembling the power steering rack and pinion requires using Special Service Tools: 09023-12701 and Special Service Tool: 09023-38201 to separate return tube No. 2 followed by the left turn pressure tube. Remove both 2 O-rings after dislodging these tubes. Follow the same method to remove the right turn pressure tube by using the same tool. Secure the power steering rack and pinion assembly by using Special Service Tool: 09612-00012 but tape the tool before application. Mark the tie rod assembly together with rack end sub-assembly before loosening the lock nut to remove the left tie rod assembly and its corresponding lock nut. Apply this same procedure to the right side components. Start by removing the 2 rack boot clips, then proceed to detach the rack boot No. 2 clamp using pliers while safeguarding the boot. Next remove the rack boot No. 1 clamp following the previous procedure before taking off both steering rack boots. Using a method of hammer and screwdriver to unstake the claw washer allows you to remove the rack and pinion end sub-assembly and claw washers with Special Service Tool: 09922-10010 while securely holding the power steering rack and pinion end. You should remove the rack guide through this sequence using Special Service Tool: 09922-10010 to detach the rack guide spring cap nut. Next, implement Special Service Tool: 09631-10021 to uninstall the spring cap and then uninstall both the compression spring and rack guide. A 27-mm socket wrench removes the rack housing cap while Special Service Tool: 09616-00011 enables the operator to hold the control valve to remove the nut. Proceed by wrapping the control valve serrated part in vinyl tape before removing the dust cover and two bolts and the valve assembly with housing finally followed by the gasket material. The housing must be placed on a plastic hammer before removing the control valve with oil seal from the serrated part by winding vinyl tape around it. Then extract the oil seal from the housing. Screwdrivers should be used to carefully remove the 4 control valve rings while avoiding grooves damage. Use Special Service Tool: 09950-70010 together with 09951-07150 and a press tool to eliminate the upper bearing and oil seal from housing while utilizing Special Service Tools 09951-00250 and 09950-60010. The removal of the cylinder end stopper requires first turning the screwdriver and hammer it clockwise until the wire end becomes visible followed by counterclockwise turning to extract the wire and stopper. The next step involves using Special Service Tool: 09527-21011 and 09612-24014 to remove the rack bush oil seal followed by a screwdriver for extracting the O-ring from the power steering rack and pinion. The cylinder tube oil seal must be removed with Special Service Tool: 09950-70010, 09951-07360 and a press using Special Service Tool: 09951-00290 and 09950-60010 before removing the rack and pinion steering piston ring and O-ring with a screwdriver without causing damage to the grooves.
