2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser Rack And Pinion Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to reassemble the Rack And Pinion on 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser?
A: When reparin the 2WD power steering link start by inserting the new rack and pinion piston ring into position after applying power steering fluid to the O-ring. The stretched "Teflon" ring needs power steering fluid before pressing it into the rack's groove. After greasing the rack teeth ends use Special Service Tool: 09631-00350 to attach the tool onto the rack and pinion but first remove any burrs which might exist. First coat Special Service Tool: 09631-00350 and the power piston oil seal with power steering fluid before you position the rack and pinion inside the rack housing while removing the tool. Before using the tool to install the new oil seal the technician must first apply power steering fluid to both the tool and the lip of the oil seal before installing it straight without tilting the tool. Install the cylinder end stopper after applying sealant and secure it to the required torque value of 145 Nm (1,479 kgf-cm, 107 ft-lbf) using Special Service Tool: 09631-20120. Special Service Tool: 09631-12071 should be installed at the rack housing unions followed by application of 53.33 kPa (400 mmHg, 15.75 in.Hg) vacuum for 30 seconds to verify air tightness. Apply molybdenum disulfide base grease to the needle roller bearing within the rack housing until it takes 2 grams while installing the control valve using 2 bolts which need tightening to 18 Nm strength (185 kgf-cm, 13 ft-lbf). Temporarily mount the rack guide spring cap on its threaded holes using a 24 mm hexagon wrench after applying sealant. The total preload adjustment requires temporarily installing RH and LH rack ends before screwing the rack guide spring cap to 25 Nm (250 kgf-cm, 18 ft-lbf) then rotating the control valve shaft using Special Service Tool: 09616-00011 while the rack guide spring cap is loosened by 30 degrees. Adjust the rack guide spring preload by rotating the cap to reach a range between 0.8 to 1.6 Nm. The technician first applies sealant to the lock nut threads and then temporarily installs it before torquing it with Special Service Tool: 09922-10010 to 69 Nm (704 kgf-cm, 51 ft-lbf) and 65 Nm (660 kgf-cm, 48 ft-lbf). To complete the procedure check the total preload one more time then remove both rack ends from the right-hand side and left-hand side of the steering mechanism. A 20 mm (0.79 in.) long wire should be inserted into the vent hole to check that no blockages exist in the power steering rack. The repair process begins by installing 2 new claw washers to the power steering rack and then putting the 2 rack and pinion ends temporarily in place before filling the ball joint with MP grease. The power steering rack end (LH side) must then be fitted using Special Service Tool: 09922-10010 for a torque of 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft-lbf) or 98 Nm (1,000 kgf-cm, 72 ft-lbf) depending on the tool choice. Stake the two claw washers with a hammer and brass bar before placing rack and pinion boots properly on both sides without harming the rubber material. The rack boot clamps and clips should be installed on both sides before verifying proper stretch when rotating the control valve shaft through Special Service Tool: 09616-00011. Use power steering fluid to lubricate 2 new O-rings before installing the left-hand and right-hand steering turn pressure tubes with the aid of Special Service Tool: 09023-38201 according to tool specifications which call for 25 Nm (250 kgf-cm, 18 ft-lbf) or 23 Nm (230 kgf-cm, 17 ft-lbf) torque settings.
