2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to install the Rack And Pinion and related components on 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser?
A: The power steering link installation requires securement with two bolts and two nuts after achieving 100 Nm (1,020 kgf-cm, 74 ft-lbf) torque using only bolt rotation because the nut has a detent. The return hose requires attachment to its clip followed by fitting the flare nut using Special Service Tool: 09023-12701 while applying a torque of 42 Nm (420 kgf-cm, 31 ft-lbf) when using the tool or 44 Nm (449 kgf-cm, 33 ft-lbf) without tool usage with a torque wrench that has a 300 mm (11.81 in.) fulcrum length for optimal accuracy. You need to install the tube support brackets with 2 bolts at a torque value of 28 Nm (286 kgf-cm, 21 ft-lbf). You should install the cooler compressor by securing the magnetic clutch with 4 bolts followed by installation of the tie rod end sub-assembly LH onto the rack and pinion knuckle arm which requires a nut torque of 91 Nm (928 kgf-cm, 67 ft-lbf) and a new cotter pin. The installation for the RH side mirrors that of the LH side. When installing the No. 2 rack and pinion intermediate shaft proceed by aligning matchmarks with both the power steering link then securing bolt C at 36 Nm (367 kgf-cm, 27 ft-lbf) while finishing with bolt A and B installed with matching torque. Align the front wheels in a straight-ahead direction before tightening them to 113 Nm (1,152 kgf-cm, 83 ft-lbf). The fan and generator V belt should go on next. Proceed by checking the steering wheel center point then attaching the cable to the negative battery terminal while tightening it to 3.9 Nm (40 kgf-cm, 35 in-lbf). Then complete the procedure with power steering fluid addition and system bleeding. Perform a check of power steering fluid leakage while conducting inspections to monitor and adjust the front wheel alignment. The last step involves the installation of the No. 1 engine under cover sub-assembly.
