2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the Rack And Pinion on 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser?
A: Starting the power steering link service and repair requires disconnecting the negative battery cable while aligning both wheels in a straight position. Begin the power steering link service by removing the No.1 engine under cover sub-assembly followed by fan and generator V belt then front wheels. Secure the wheel with a seat belt as a measure to stop its rotation before conducting matchmarks on three elements: steering sliding yoke, No. 2 steering intermediate shaft and steering intermediate shaft. Disassemble bolt A and B from the steering sliding yoke before sliding it upward to detach from the No.2 steering intermediate shaft and finally pulling downward for removal. The technician should place matchmarks on the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft along with the power steering link. The technician can then remove bolt C followed by moving the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft up to disconnect it from the power steering link. Disassemble the tie rod end sub-assembly LH by first removing its nut and cotter pin before separating it from the steering knuckle arm using Special Service Tool: 09628-62011, then repeat this procedure for the RH side. Start with the removal of the pressure feed tube assembly by untightening the flare nut with Special Service Tool: 09023-12701. First remove the return hose. After that use a 4-bolt removal to extract the cooler compressor assembly from the transmission. The power steering link removal requires the unbolted 2 bolts and 2 nuts but avoid twisting the bolts because the nuts have a detent feature. The transmission should be tilted while disassembling the power steering link. The process for disassembly involves securing the power steering link with Special Service Tool: 09023-38201 to remove the 2 turn pressure tubes which are then placed in a vise using Special Service Tool: 09612-00012. Remove the tie rod end sub-assemblies LH and RH by first loosening the lock nut and then marking both components before uninstalling. Separate the clamps and clips from both steering rack boots before taking off the boots. Apply a screwdriver and hammer to stake back the 2 washers on the rack and pinion end sub-assembly before using Special Service Tool: 09922-10010 to extract the rack and pinion ends from both sides, while holding the rack and pinion. The rack guide should be removed through Special Service Tool: 09922-10010 to detach the lock nut and claw washer and then use a 24 mm hexagon wrench to remove the rack guide spring cap followed by the spring and rack guide. The power steering control valve needs removal by unscrewing its 2 bolts to detach from the rack housing. The cylinder end stopper removal requires Special Service Tool: 09631-20120 followed by rack and pinion and oil seal compression with Special Service Tool: 09950-70010 (09951-07200) with strict avoidance of letting the rack and pinion fall. An inspection of the power steering rack requires a wires insertion into the vent hole for checking clogs while proper torque readings must be verified on tie rod end sub-assemblies LH and RH. Steer the removal of the rack and pinion piston ring and O-ring while taking proper caution. You must first apply power steering fluid to a new Teflon ring and stretch it before inserting the ring into the groove. Next, install an O-ring onto the rack and pinion. Use power steering fluid to coat the rack and pinion teeth ends before installing Service Tool: 09631-00350 onto the rack and dipping the tool along with the oil seal in fluid when installing the rack into the rack housing. Use Special Service Tool: 09631-20120 to tighten the cylinder end stopper with the attached sealant inside its mounting. Apply vacuum until the total tightness becomes apparent. Install and torque the power steering control valve after applying molybdenum disulfide base grease. Use sealant on the rack guide spring cap threads before temporarily attaching it and the rack guide together. Test the total preload of the rack guide spring cap by first tightening then loosening the cap marginally while utilizing Special Service Tool: 09616-00011. Fitting the new claw washers to the rack and pinion end sub-assembly users must perform a temporary installation of the rack and pinion ends while filling the ball joint with MP grease to complete the power steering rack end sub-assembly installation by tightening its components to standard torque values. Install the rack and pinion boots and clamps in their proper position without harming the boot material before installing the power steering link with pressure feed tube assembly that requires tightening a flare nut using Special Service Tool: 09023-12701. Install all cooler compressor assembly parts and tie rod end sub-assemblies by maintaining correct torque specifications. First last the motor vehicle cover sub-assembly with front wheels while installing the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft. Then reconnect the negative battery terminal while bleaching the power steering system with fluid checks for leaks and wheel alignment inspection and eventual adjustment.
