Toyota FJ Cruiser Rack And Pinion Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to disassemble the Rack And Pinion on Toyota FJ Cruiser?
A: The process for taking apart the power steering link of a 2WD vehicle starts with fixing the link using Special Service Tool: 09023-38201 to eliminate the 2 turn pressure tubes before clamping the link between aluminum plates inside a vise with Special Service Tool: 09612-00012. Prerotate and note the tie rod end along with its lock nut and rack end before you untighten the lock nut which allows the removal of the tie rod end sub-assembly LH exactly like the procedure for the tie rod end sub-assembly RH. To access the rack and pinion boots safely, use pliers equipped with a screwdriver to loosen the clamp at the LH side while making notes about boot positions and maintaining boot safety before repeating the process at the RH side. Rack and pinion boot clips LH and RH must be detached using pliers while ensuring boot protection until the rack and pinion boots LH and RH can be removed. Begin by stating the 2 rack and pinion end sub-assembly washers then use a screwdriver and hammer with precaution not to hit the rack and pinion during staking. After holding the left-hand rack and pinion with a wrench apply Service Tool 09922-10010 to separate both rack ends by rotating the tool per instructions. Start by removing two claw washers using Special Service Tool: 09922-10010 to take out the rack guide lock nut and claw washer before employing a 24 mm hexagon wrench to detach the rack guide spring cap. This should be followed by extracting the rack guide spring and guide. Begin by taking off the power steering control valve after removing its two attaching bolts from the rack housing. Special Service Tool: 09631-20120 should be used to extract the cylinder end stopper while Special Service Tool: 09950-70010 09951-07200 should be used to press out both the rack and pinion and oil seal. Maintain the rack and pinion from dropping and extract the oil seal from it. The power steering rack and pinion requires inspection by inserting a wire 20 mm (0.79 in.) into the vent hole to evaluate for clogs since any obstruction will affect boot pressure during assembly. Installation of the tie rod end sub-assembly LH starts by performing five repetitions of ball joint stud motion followed by applying proper torque from a wrench to tighten the nut between 0.29 to 1.96 Nm (2.96 to 20 kgf-cm, 2.56 to 17.35 in-lbf) during the fifth turn. Perform this inspection once again for the right-hand tie rod end sub-assembly. To remove the rack and pinion piston ring use a screwdriver which should be employed to extract the "Teflon" ring and O-ring from the rack and pinion keeping a watchful eye on avoiding ring groove damage.
