2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove the camshaft on 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser?
A: The first step to remove the camshaft from a 1GR-FE engine starts with negating the battery terminal cable during the procedure and draining out the engine coolant. The procedure begins with removal of the V-bank cover followed by air cleaner assembly then throttle body bracket and oil baffle plate together with No. 1 and No. 2 surge tank stays and intake air surge tank and ignition coil assembly. Next proceed to remove the cylinder head cover sub-assembly and the cylinder head cover sub-assembly LH by unorchestrating 10 bolts, 3 seal washers, 2 nuts and the gasket. To set the No. 1 cylinder at TDC/compression you must align the crankshaft pulley groove with "0" timing mark while still keeping the camshaft timing gears' marks correctly positioned at the bearing caps. Apply paint pen marks onto the links of Chain No. 1 where timing marks should be placed. Remove the No. 1 chain tensioner assembly by pushing in the plunger of the chain tensioner and fix the stopper plate with a 3.5 mm bar before removing the tensioner after taking out the 4 bolts and the timing chain cover plate and gasket. The removal process for the No. 2 camshaft must be done with the component kept flat to prevent damage; elevate the chain tensioner No. 2 then apply a pin measuring 1.0 mm to secure it before using a wrench to remove the timing gear set bolt and separate the timing gear so you can turn the camshaft counterclockwise to face the cam lobes upward. First loosen and remove the specified bolt sequence of 8 bearing cap bolts before removing the 4 bearing caps along with the No. 2 camshaft. Sever the No. 2 chain tensioner assembly with the camshaft timing gear from the engine block. When leveling the No. 1 camshaft proceed by loosening the timing gear set bolt then sliding the timing gear so you can rotate the camshaft until its lobes match the downward position. Users should first loosen the 8 bearing cap bolts and then remove the 4 caps and No. 1 camshaft together with its timing gear. String should be used to secure the No. 1 chain to stop objects from entering the timing chain cover. The process to remove the No. 4 camshaft requires depressing the No. 3 chain tensioner while inserting a 1.0 mm pin then gripping the hexagonal section of the No. 4 camshaft to remove the timing gear set bolt before completing the steps to remove bearing caps and the No. 4 camshaft. To remove the No. 3 camshaft begin by freeing the chain tension followed by holding the hexagonal shape before loosening the timing gear set bolt. Then slide the timing gear to remove the bearing caps as well as the No. 3 camshaft while keeping the No. 1 chain secured with string.
